Job for Project Manager – ECHO
Project Manager – ECHO (Expanded Description)
The Project Manager – ECHO role at Christian Aid presents a strategic leadership opportunity for experienced humanitarian professionals seeking to drive impactful, large-scale emergency programming in Northeast and Northwest Nigeria. Based in Borno State, this 12-month fixed-term, full-time position is central to delivering high-quality, accountable, and adaptive humanitarian assistance under the ECHO-funded Goyon Baya Response Project.
Reporting to the Programme & Partnership Lead for Nigeria, the Project Manager will provide overall leadership, coordination, and technical direction for the project, ensuring effective delivery of Multi-Purpose Cash Assistance (MPCA) alongside integrated Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WaSH) interventions. The role also ensures that protection principles are fully mainstreamed across all activities, guaranteeing safe, inclusive, and dignified assistance to affected populations.
A core responsibility of this position is leading the design, activation, and management of the Rapid Response and Referral Mechanism (RRRM). This includes overseeing rapid needs assessments, response prioritisation, and timely delivery of assistance in high-risk and hard-to-reach areas such as Ngala in Borno State and Mashi in Katsina State. The Project Manager must ensure that interventions remain responsive to evolving humanitarian needs, market dynamics, and security conditions.
The role requires strong leadership in programme planning, implementation, and close-out, ensuring alignment with approved proposals, budgets, and donor requirements. The Project Manager will oversee MPCA programming, including transfer value determination, targeting methodologies, and market monitoring systems. In addition, they will provide technical oversight to WaSH interventions, ensuring quality, sustainability, and compliance with sector standards.
Working within a consortium framework, the Project Manager will manage and strengthen collaboration with the implementing partner, Smiling Hearts Initiative (SHI). This includes coordinating joint planning, supporting partner capacity development, and ensuring effective localisation practices. The role also demands maintaining clear communication and coordination across operations in both Borno (Northeast) and Katsina (Northwest), adapting strategies to each context.
Ensuring full compliance with DG ECHO requirements is critical. The Project Manager will lead the preparation of high-quality narrative and financial reports, maintain audit-ready documentation, and enforce robust risk management and fraud prevention systems. Oversight of monitoring, evaluation, accountability, and learning (MEAL) systems—including baseline studies, post-distribution monitoring (PDM), and outcome tracking—is essential to inform evidence-based decision-making and adaptive management.
The Project Manager will also represent Christian Aid in coordination platforms, including clusters, working groups, and government-led forums at both state and national levels. Building and maintaining strong relationships with donors, local authorities, and humanitarian actors is key to successful programme delivery and strategic positioning.
The ideal candidate will hold a postgraduate qualification in Development, Humanitarian Studies, or a related field, with at least seven years of experience managing humanitarian programmes. Strong expertise in MPCA, prior experience with ECHO-funded projects, and solid knowledge of WaSH programming are essential. Experience in conflict-affected regions, particularly in Northeast or Northwest Nigeria, is highly desirable, alongside strong analytical, problem-solving, and report-writing skills.
This role offers an opportunity to lead a high-impact humanitarian response within a respected global organisation committed to dignity, equality, and justice. It is best suited for professionals with strong leadership capabilities, strategic thinking, and a passion for delivering life-saving assistance in complex environments.
