Apply for Finance Associate job
Finance Associate (Expanded Description)
The Finance Associate role at Christian Aid offers an excellent opportunity for finance professionals to contribute to impactful humanitarian and development programming in Nigeria. Based in Abuja, this 12-month fixed-term, full-time position is ideal for individuals with strong financial management skills who are passionate about accountability, compliance, and supporting programmes that improve the lives of vulnerable communities.
Reporting to the Senior Programme Finance Specialist, the Finance Associate will play a key role in ensuring effective financial management of a donor-funded humanitarian project, particularly one supported by ECHO. The position is central to maintaining financial integrity, supporting programme teams, and ensuring that all financial activities comply with donor regulations, organisational policies, and Nigerian statutory requirements.
A major aspect of this role involves managing day-to-day financial operations. The Finance Associate will ensure that all project expenditures are accurately recorded, properly coded, and well-documented. They will prepare monthly financial reports, expenditure analyses, and cash forecasts, enabling project teams to track spending and make informed decisions. Monitoring budgets and identifying variances, underspending, or financial risks will also be critical responsibilities, with timely escalation to senior management where necessary.
The role also involves reviewing payment requests and supporting documentation to ensure compliance with Christian Aid’s financial procedures. The Finance Associate will process payments to suppliers, partners, and staff efficiently while adhering to established approval workflows. Managing travel advances, maintaining float registers, and ensuring timely retirement of advances are additional key duties.
Another important component of the role is partner financial management. The Finance Associate will work closely with implementing partners, supporting them with budgeting, financial reporting, and compliance. This includes identifying capacity gaps and providing hands-on support and training to strengthen partners’ financial management systems and practices.
Maintaining proper documentation and audit readiness is essential. The Finance Associate will ensure that all financial records are well-organised, both physically and electronically, in line with Christian Aid standards. They will also support internal and external audits by preparing required documentation and responding to audit queries.
The ideal candidate will hold a bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field, along with 3–5 years of relevant experience, preferably within an NGO or donor-funded project environment. Strong knowledge of financial controls, reporting, and Nigerian statutory requirements such as PAYE, withholding tax, and pensions is required. Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and experience with accounting systems such as SUN are highly desirable.
This role is well-suited for detail-oriented professionals who can work under pressure, meet deadlines, and maintain high standards of accuracy and integrity. Experience in humanitarian or emergency response programmes and familiarity with international NGO systems will be an added advantage.
Ultimately, the Finance Associate position provides an opportunity to contribute to a mission-driven organisation committed to ending poverty and promoting dignity, equality, and justice. It is ideal for finance professionals who want to apply their skills in a meaningful and impactful way.
