ABOUT THE DISBURMA STUDY

The DISBURMA Study, which means Disaggregating the Burden of Severe Malaria in Paediatric Populations in Nigeria, is a multi-centre retrospective cohort study examining severe malaria among children and adolescents aged 0–20 years.

The study will analyse routine hospital records from January 2021 to December 2025 across 18 selected health facilities representing Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones, different malaria epidemiological profiles, urban and rural settings and population densities.

The study will examine age-specific incidence, clinical presentations, case-fatality rates, temporal trends, comorbidities, complications and facility-level differences in severe malaria burden and management practices.

1. RESEARCH COORDINATOR

LOCATION: ABUJA, FCT

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Support briefing and preparation for the study.
2. Support the training of Research Assistants to identify severe malaria cases from registers and medical records.
3. Monitor and supervise Research Assistants during data extraction.
4. Screen and validate data collected from study sites.
5. Analyse study data.
6. Coordinate day-to-day study activities and provide technical oversight.
7. Support data quality assurance, data management and progress monitoring.
8. Coordinate with relevant stakeholders.
9. Prepare the final analysis-ready dataset.
10. Prepare activity, technical, monitoring and supervision reports.

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS

1. Minimum of a Master’s degree in health sciences, social sciences or a related field.
2. Minimum 5 years of research or equivalent subject-matter experience.
3. Experience in health services provision.
4. Experience using electronic platforms for data capture and reporting.
5. Familiarity with secondary, tertiary and private hospital management systems.
6. Excellent communication skills.
7. Experience collaborating with government institutions, NGOs or academic institutions is desirable.
8. Understanding of diverse audiences and cultures.
9. Training in health research ethics is desirable.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Identify severe malaria cases from hospital registers and case notes.
2. Work with medical record officers to retrieve and review patient records.
3. Extract data from inpatient medical records, laboratory registers, paediatric and emergency department logs, referral and discharge forms and severe malaria registers.
4. Enter extracted information into the electronic data collection platform.
5. Capture patient demographics, admission details, diagnosis, treatment, laboratory results and outcomes.
6. Record clinical presentations, comorbidities and complications.
7. Ensure completeness and accuracy of extracted data.
8. Respond to data queries and requests from the technical team and relevant partners.
9. Submit all required data and identified severe malaria case records.

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS

1. Minimum of a diploma in a health-related course or equivalent subject-matter experience.
2. Registered Nurse or Midwife, or holder of a diploma or degree in health-related sciences.
3. Candidates should preferably be currently working in the paediatric or medical ward of the project hospital as staff or volunteers.
4. Significant experience in inpatient care.
5. Experience using electronic platforms to capture and report data.
6. Familiarity with secondary, tertiary and private hospitals.
