The British High Commission Abuja is recruiting a Conflict Adviser to provide high-quality conflict analysis, conflict sensitivity advice and policy support across the Security, Stability and Humanitarian Group and the wider Mission.

The successful candidate will provide analysis and advice on priority conflict and security dynamics across Nigeria, with particular focus on areas not currently covered by the UK’s SPRING peacebuilding and conflict prevention programme, including the North East and parts of the North West such as Zamfara and Sokoto.

The role will support peacebuilding, security and counter-terrorism portfolios and help ensure that conflict analysis informs policy, programmes, diplomatic engagement and senior decision-making.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Produce high-quality conflict and security analysis and translate findings into practical recommendations for policy, programmes and diplomatic engagement.
  2. Produce regular conflict trend updates and demand-driven analysis for Mission priorities.
  3. Provide briefings and advisory support to senior leadership, visiting UK officials and relevant teams.
  4. Lead joint analysis with governance, development, economic growth, political and other thematic teams.
  5. Provide conflict sensitivity advice across conflict and peacebuilding, counter-terrorism, International Security Fund and humanitarian portfolios.
  6. Review programme design and delivery and recommend adaptations based on conflict analysis.
  7. Support conflict-sensitive approaches to programme design, implementation, risk management and strategic planning.
  8. Develop and maintain external engagement and influence plans for agreed conflict and security policy priorities.
  9. Coordinate conflict-related policy issues across the British High Commission Abuja.
  10. Support policy areas including state police reform, disarmament, demobilisation and reintegration, security and justice, and stabilisation.
  11. Build relationships with federal and state governments, donors, multilateral organisations, civil society, researchers and implementing partners.
  12. Lead conflict analytical and advisory coverage across the North East and relevant parts of the North West, while providing wider support across Nigeria when required.
  13. Maintain a credible network of national and state-level contacts.
  14. Use conflict data, political economy analysis, programme evidence and partner reporting to inform advice and decision-making.
  15. Capture lessons from analysis, policy engagement and programme delivery and support adaptive management.
  16. Contribute to knowledge sharing, mentoring, professional development and wider Mission priorities.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

  1. Master’s degree in Conflict Studies, Governance, Political Analysis, Public Policy, International Development or a related field.
  2. Significant experience conducting conflict and political analysis in fragile or conflict-affected contexts.
  3. Experience translating conflict analysis into practical policy, programme or diplomatic recommendations.
  4. Experience in peacebuilding, stabilisation, security and justice, and DDR policy development and programming.
  5. In-depth knowledge of Nigeria’s security and conflict dynamics.
  6. Strong expertise in conflict dynamics in Northern Nigeria, particularly the North East.
  7. Experience providing conflict sensitivity advice to policy or programme teams.
  8. Strong stakeholder engagement, influencing and relationship management skills.
  9. Strong judgement, prioritisation and written communication skills.
  10. Experience working with government, development partners, multilateral organisations or implementing partners in complex operating environments.

WORKING ARRANGEMENT

The position will be based in Abuja and requires periodic travel within Nigeria, including to higher-risk locations where formally approved.

Flexible working may be available subject to business needs, security requirements, the relevant British High Commission policies and agreement with the line manager.

The role may occasionally require work outside standard hours in response to fast-moving events.

STAFF AND BUDGET RESPONSIBILITY

No direct line management or delegated budget is currently envisaged.

The post holder may, however, lead cross-team analytical or policy work and manage short-term research or consultancy inputs where agreed.

LEARNING AND DEVELOPMENT

The successful candidate will have access to the FCDO Conflict Adviser cadre and professional network, relevant technical learning and accreditation, and opportunities to deepen expertise in Nigeria and West Africa.
