Job Title:

Nutrition Assistant

Locations:

Monguno, Maiduguri, Magumeri, and Dikwa – Borno State

Job Purpose:

The Nutrition Assistant will be responsible for delivering high-quality Infant and Young Child Feeding in Emergencies (IYCF-E) services at both community and health facility levels.

The role involves working closely with other team members to promote optimal infant and young child feeding practices, prevent malnutrition, and support community-based nutrition interventions.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct community awareness and sensitization on:
    • CMAM (Community Management of Acute Malnutrition)
    • IYCF practices
    • Causes, prevention, and treatment of malnutrition
  • Participate in screening children under five, referrals, and follow-up of malnourished cases
  • Support community mobilization activities in collaboration with the Ministry of Health (MOH), local leaders, and stakeholders
  • Submit timely weekly and monthly reports, including MUAC screening data
  • Establish and support Mother-to-Mother Support Groups for IYCF
  • Strengthen coordination and communication with CMAM staff and other team members
  • Conduct health education sessions on infant and young child feeding practices
  • Support the establishment of Care Groups (CGs) to enhance community knowledge and support for mothers
  • Assist in recruiting and training care group promoters
  • Strengthen linkages between beneficiaries and health facilities/CMAM services
  • Conduct home visits and participate in nutrition surveillance activities
  • Provide direct IYCF support services, including growth monitoring
  • Organize food demonstration sessions and community discussions
  • Conduct focus group discussions to identify barriers to proper feeding practices
  • Ensure gender mainstreaming and integration with other sectors
  • Support documentation, including case studies and success stories
  • Perform additional duties as assigned

Position Requirements:

Education:

  • Diploma or Certificate in Community Health Extension Work (CHEW)

Professional Experience:

  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience as a Nutrition Assistant or in a similar role
  • Previous experience with NGOs is an added advantage

Technical Skills & Competencies:

  • Experience in supervising and training team members
  • Strong analytical and reporting skills
  • Understanding of nutrition programs such as CMAM and IYCF
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure and adapt to changing environments

  • Flexibility and good stress management
  • Commitment to humanitarian and INTERSOS principles
  • High level of professionalism and accountability

Languages:

  • Fluency in English is required
  • Knowledge of local languages such as Hausa and Kanuri is an added advantage
