Community Health Extension Worker (CHEW)

Location:

Monguno, Borno State

Job Purpose:

The Community Health Extension Worker (CHEW) will be responsible for delivering health education and awareness at the community level, while strengthening the connection between local communities and INTERSOS-supported health facilities and Ministry of Health (MOH) structures.

The role is key to improving community health outcomes through sensitization, early detection, and community engagement.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collect and report community-level data to the CHW Supervisor, including:
    • Disease perception and health-seeking behavior
    • Food security status
    • Vaccination coverage among children
    • Community feedback on healthcare services
    • Living conditions and vulnerability risks
  • Deliver health education and awareness messages on key health topics and available INTERSOS services
  • Strengthen relationships between the community and INTERSOS-supported health services
  • Support community mobilization and participation in health awareness and prevention activities
  • Identify and engage local stakeholders, NGOs, and community groups for outreach programs
  • Assist in mapping community resources such as schools, religious centers, villages, and gathering points
  • Facilitate communication and collaboration with local authorities when required
  • Support defaulter tracing activities to ensure continuity of care for patients
  • Provide regular updates to the Supervisor on progress, challenges, and field observations

Position Requirements:

Education:

  • Diploma or Certificate in Community Health Extension Work (CHEW)

Professional Experience:

  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience, preferably in humanitarian or emergency settings
  • CHW training conducted by the Ministry of Health (MOH) is an added advantage

Technical Skills:

  • Basic computer literacy (Microsoft Word, Excel, and internet use)
  • Previous experience in a similar role is an added advantage

  • Ability to collect and report accurate field data
  • Understanding of community health practices and awareness strategies

Languages:

  • Fluency in English is required
  • Knowledge of local languages such as Hausa and Kanuri is an added advantage
