Overview
The U.S. Consulate General in Lagos serves as the primary diplomatic representative of the United States to the people of southern Nigeria. Under the leadership of Consul General Will Stevens, the Consulate fosters critical partnerships with Nigeria’s government, business, and academic communities.

Role Summary
The U.S. Consulate is seeking a highly qualified and analytically minded individual for the position of Political/Economic Assistant. The incumbent will play a vital role in the Political-Economic Section by monitoring and reporting on significant developments across the 17 states comprising the Lagos consular district. The role involves high-level analysis of environmental, social, political, and economic trends to support U.S. diplomatic objectives in the region.
Primary Responsibilities
• Regional Reporting: Assist in comprehensive reporting on political and economic landscapes in southern Nigeria.
• Thematic Monitoring: Track and analyze environmental and social issues affecting the consular district.
• Strategic Analysis: Evaluate relevant political and social developments, providing data-driven insights for mission leadership.
• Documentation: Draft formal letters, memoranda, and complex reports with high precision and minimal editorial oversight.
Qualifications and Requirements
Education:
• A Bachelor’s degree in Law, Economics, Business, Trade, Finance, International Relations, or a related field is mandatory.
Professional Experience:
• A minimum of two (2) years of prior professional experience in research, data analysis, and the drafting of narrative-based reports is required.
Job Knowledge:
• Comprehensive understanding of the U.S. Embassy/Consulate operations.
• In-depth knowledge of the structure of the Government of Nigeria and the roles of key political and economic actors.
• Working knowledge of official government protocols.
Skills and Abilities:
• Exceptional analytical skills and the ability to synthesize complex data into clear reports.
• Advanced drafting skills, with the capacity to produce professional-grade memoranda and narrative reports requiring minimal editing.
Compensation
The position offers a competitive salary of USD $48,225 per year, along with a robust benefits package in line with U.S. Mission standards.
