The Athena Centre for Policy and Leadership, a leading Nigerian think tank dedicated to advancing evidence-based policy solutions and shaping national discourse, is currently inviting applications for the role of Research & Opinion Writer. This role goes beyond conventional writing. It is tailored for professionals who can interrogate evidence, challenge assumptions, and develop independent arguments that contribute meaningfully to policy conversations. Successful candidates will be responsible for producing Athena Notes — concise, research-driven opinion pieces that explore critical issues across sectors such as health, education, governance, and development.
🧠 Role Overview:
The Research & Opinion Writer will identify pressing policy questions, conduct in-depth research, and craft well-structured, persuasive articles that influence public debate and inform decision-making. The role requires intellectual curiosity, originality, and the ability to simplify complex policy challenges for broader audiences without losing analytical depth.

- Compensation: ₦50,000 per published Athena Note

🎯 Key Responsibilities:
- Develop research-based opinion pieces on contemporary policy issues
- Analyze data and evidence to support strong, independent arguments
- Translate technical policy topics into accessible and engaging content
- Contribute to thought leadership and national policy conversations
- Identify emerging trends and critical questions shaping Nigeria and Africa
🎓 Qualifications & Requirements:
- Master’s degree in Health, Education, Governance, Public Policy, or related fields
- Strong research, analytical, and critical-thinking skills
- Excellent command of written English with the ability to craft persuasive narratives
- Proven experience in research writing, policy analysis, or thought leadership
- Deep understanding of socio-economic and political issues in Nigeria and Africa
- Ability to generate original ideas and develop them into compelling arguments
