Position Summary
The Safeguarding Coordinator plays a critical role in strengthening safeguarding systems and ensuring the protection of program participants, staff, and communities. The role focuses on promoting and embedding Mercy Corps’ Safeguarding Core Standards across all departments while fostering a safe, inclusive, and accountable working environment.
The Coordinator will work closely with internal teams, partners, and stakeholders to mainstream safeguarding practices, enhance accountability, and support survivor-centered approaches.
Key Responsibilities
1. Training & Awareness
- Deliver safeguarding training and workshops for staff, partners, and stakeholders
- Strengthen safeguarding training materials and learning systems
- Build capacity of Safeguarding Focal Points and Champions
- Promote awareness of safeguarding, child protection, and reporting mechanisms
- Ensure safeguarding is integrated into onboarding processes
2. Systems & Processes
- Coordinate safeguarding audits and internal assessments
- Strengthen safeguarding systems within Mercy Corps and partner organizations
- Promote a culture free from exploitation, abuse, and harassment
- Support internal investigations while maintaining confidentiality
- Work with teams to identify risks and implement mitigation strategies
3. Program Support
- Provide safeguarding technical input into proposals and program design
- Support risk assessments and ensure mitigation plans are realistic and effective
- Integrate safeguarding into program implementation and monitoring
4. Survivor Support
- Act as a reporting channel for safeguarding concerns
- Ensure survivor-centered response, safety, and confidentiality
- Maintain and update referral pathways and service maps
- Report safeguarding cases to the Global Ethics Team as required
5. Coordination & Representation
- Represent Mercy Corps in coordination forums, clusters, and PSEA networks
- Collaborate with government, NGOs, and other stakeholders
- Support donor compliance and safeguarding requirements
Requirements
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Social Work, Law, Communications, Education, or a related field
Experience
- Minimum of 2–4 years of relevant experience in safeguarding, protection, or related fields
- Experience in training facilitation, coordination, and capacity building
- Experience working across departments and with senior stakeholders
Skills & Competencies
- Strong understanding of safeguarding, child protection, or PSEA
- Excellent communication, facilitation, and interpersonal skills
- Strong analytical, organizational, and reporting abilities
- Cultural sensitivity and ability to work in diverse environments
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines
Languages
- Fluency in English
- Knowledge of Hausa or other local languages is an advantage
Technical Skills
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office tools
- Strong data management and reporting skills

- Ability to work in complex and high-risk environments
