Project Context
The position is part of the BHA-funded project titled Integrated Emergency Response to Displaced Populations in Zamfara, Sokoto, and Katsina States. This multi-sectoral intervention is implemented by IRC in partnership with organizations such as ALIMA, COOPI, LHI, and GISCOR.
The project delivers integrated services across Health, Nutrition, WASH, Protection, and Multi-purpose Cash Assistance (MPCA), targeting internally displaced populations through a coordinated, area-based approach in collaboration with government and humanitarian actors.
Job Overview
The Child Protection Assistant will support the implementation of child protection activities at field level, focusing on case management, psychosocial support, and community engagement. The role involves working closely with vulnerable children and families, community-based structures, and internal teams to ensure effective delivery of child protection services.
The position also contributes to data collection, reporting, supervision of community volunteers, and strengthening referral pathways for at-risk children.
Key Responsibilities
1. Child Protection Programming
- Conduct vulnerability assessments to identify at-risk children, including those facing abuse, neglect, or exploitation
- Implement case management processes, including individualized care plans
- Facilitate psychosocial support activities for children and adolescents
- Organize parenting sessions for caregivers and promote child well-being
2. Community Engagement and Coordination
- Collaborate with government agencies and stakeholders on child protection cases
- Work with community-based child protection committees (CBPCs) for safe identification and referrals
- Conduct service mapping to strengthen referral pathways
- Promote regular interaction with communities to support protection activities
3. Data Management and Reporting
- Ensure proper use of Child Protection Information Management Systems (CPIMS)
- Maintain data confidentiality and protection standards
- Prepare activity schedules, reports, and documentation of field activities
- Conduct monthly child protection monitoring
4. Capacity Building and Supervision
- Train and mentor community volunteers and facilitators
- Provide ongoing supervision and performance feedback
- Support development of community structures for sustainability
5. Team Collaboration and Coordination
- Work closely with Child Protection Officers, Managers, and other IRC sectors
- Participate in regular coordination meetings and learning sessions
- Report progress, challenges, and recommendations to supervisors
Qualifications and Requirements
- Minimum of a Degree or HND in Social Work, Psychology, Education, or related Social Sciences
- At least 2 years of experience in child protection programming within humanitarian or development contexts
- Experience in case management, psychosocial support, and safeguarding mechanisms
Skills and Competencies
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Ability to work effectively in team environments and under pressure
- Good time management and organizational skills
- Fluency in English is required; knowledge of Hausa is an added advantage
- Commitment to humanitarian principles and safeguarding standards
