Advancing Grassroots Leadership for Credible, Positive, and Sustainable Outcomes Application Deadline: 20 May 2026
Eligibility: Women aged 18–45 from all parts of Nigeria

Programme Duration: Six months
Organized by: Aid for African Women & Girls (A2WG)

About the Programme
Aid for African Women & Girls (A2WG) is pleased to invite applications for Women Leading the Change (WLC) – Cohort 2, a six-month leadership and civic engagement programme designed to support women across Nigeria to grow in leadership, strengthen their voice in governance, and contribute meaningfully to democratic development at the grassroots.

As Nigeria moves closer to the 2027 General Elections, the need for informed, courageous, and community-rooted women leaders has become even more urgent. Across the country, women continue to play important roles in mobilizing communities, shaping conversations, and sustaining local systems, yet they remain underrepresented in political participation, public leadership, and electoral decision- making spaces.

WLC – Cohort 2 is designed to help close that gap.

This year’s cohort will focus on preparing women to become stronger civic actors, trusted grassroots leaders, and positive forces for credible, peaceful, inclusive, and sustainable electoral outcomes in their communities and beyond.

Background
Nigeria’s democratic future depends not only on institutions and systems, but also on the quality of leadership and participation at the grassroots. As the 2027 General Elections approach, there is a growing need for women who can engage thoughtfully in civic processes, promote peaceful participation, support voter awareness, challenge exclusion, and help build trust in democratic outcomes.

At the same time, many women, particularly at community level, still face barriers to effective participation. These include low access to leadership development opportunities, weak mentorship support, limited civic literacy, exclusion from governance spaces, and insufficient platforms for public engagement.

Through WLC – Cohort 2, A2WG seeks to respond to this reality by nurturing a new generation of women leaders who are informed, connected, and ready to contribute to positive change before, during, and beyond the 2027 elections.

Overall Goal
To strengthen women’s grassroots leadership, civic participation, and democratic agency in ways that contribute to credible, peaceful, positive, and sustainable outcomes in the lead-up to Nigeria’s 2027 General Elections and beyond.

Specific Objectives
The programme aims to:

Build the leadership capacity of women across Nigeria to engage more confidently and effectively in civic, political, and governance processes.
2. Increase women’s understanding of democratic participation, elections, and accountable
governance in preparation for the 2027 General Elections.

Promote women-led grassroots action that supports voter awareness, peaceful participation, inclusion, and community ownership of electoral processes.
Strengthen women’s voice, confidence, and public influence through mentorship, peer learning, and leadership development.
Encourage community-level change initiatives led by women on issues related to democratic participation, social accountability, and inclusive governance.
Create a national network of women changemakers who can learn from one another, collaborate across contexts, and sustain impact beyond the programme cycle.
