The Republic is recruiting Sub-Editors to deepen, organize, and expand its coverage across Nigeria and Africa. Successful candidates will lead zonal, regional, and thematic desks, shaping how local realities connect to national, continental, and global conversations.
Sub-Editors play a critical role in maintaining The Republic’s editorial standards and expanding its intellectual and geographic reach. The role is fully remote and part-time, suitable for editors with a strong editorial eye, an active network of contributors, and a commitment to high-quality journalism.
Role Overview
Each Sub-Editor will manage a dedicated desk and work closely with reporters, writers, subject-matter experts, and senior editors. Responsibilities include commissioning and shaping stories, editing accepted work, and ensuring clarity, accuracy, and coherence from pitch to publication. Content will range from long-form investigative features to in-depth analysis of Nigeria- and Africa-focused issues.
Compensation
Sub-Editors are expected to commission two stories per month and are paid 150 dollars per commissioned story published. Where Sub-Editors write stories, they will receive The Republic’s standard rate of 200 dollars per accepted piece. The core responsibility of this role is commissioning stories. Self-written stories do not count toward the monthly commissioning expectation.
Key Responsibilities
Identify important subjects and emerging issues, develop pitches, and commission stories subject to editorial approval
Edit reported features, interviews, essays, and opinion pieces for grammar, clarity, structure, tone, and flow
Fact-check content to ensure accuracy, consistency, and editorial integrity
Ensure all work adheres to The Republic’s editorial guidelines and house style
Write and refine headlines, captions, standfirsts, and pull quotes
Collaborate with senior editors to strengthen stories conceptually and structurally
Review proofs and final drafts before publication
Requirements
Proven experience as a Sub-Editor, Copy Editor, or Editor in journalism, media, or a research or think-tank environment
Experience managing and working with writers, journalists, and subject-matter experts
Excellent command of written English and strong editorial judgment
Ability to edit across multiple formats including reported features, long-form essays, analysis, and opinion
Strong attention to detail and ability to meet deadlines
Ability to work remotely and collaborate with a distributed editorial team
Qualification: Degree or HND
