Chatham House is seeking a Research Fellow to join its Africa Programme and contribute to independent policy research focused on West Africa, with significant work on Nigeria.
The successful candidate will contribute to impactful research, stakeholder engagement, research events and innovative projects covering governance, economy and trade, and security across West Africa.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Design and deliver research projects aligned with the strategic goals of the Africa Programme and Chatham House.
Conduct high-quality, policy-relevant research on West Africa, particularly Nigeria, covering governance, politics, economy and trade, and security.
Identify new research areas, questions and opportunities where the Africa Programme can add value.
Develop innovative approaches to research and project design while ensuring delivery within agreed objectives, budgets and timelines.
Oversee field research, including planning, team safety, arrangements and risk assessments.
Produce research outputs including reports, research papers, policy papers, op-eds, expert commentary and audio-visual content.
Contribute to public and policy debates through research, analysis and expert engagement.
Support the dissemination of research through seminars, workshops, publications, online resources and other channels.
Promote research activities through the Chatham House website, media channels and external speaking engagements.
Design and support research events, conferences and policy discussions that encourage diverse perspectives and trust-building.
Build and maintain networks with individuals, businesses, institutions, experts and other stakeholders.
Support fundraising by identifying funding leads, preparing applications and contributing to proposals.
Help strengthen relationships with donors, corporate supporters and other funding partners.
Deliver briefings to supporters and programme stakeholders based on relevant research and expertise.
Collaborate across Chatham House to strengthen Africa-related research and contribute to the Institute’s Equality, Diversity and Inclusion strategy.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
Proven research experience on West Africa, particularly Nigeria.
Strong knowledge or research experience covering governance, economy and trade, and security.
Strong analytical, problem-solving and fact-checking skills.
Exceptional writing skills and experience producing policy-relevant analysis.
Experience using qualitative and quantitative research methodologies.
Experience producing high-quality research outputs.
Ability to communicate research findings through different channels and formats.
Experience supporting research events, conferences and policy discussions.
Experience supporting fundraising activities, including concept notes, funding proposals and donor engagement.
Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
Ability to manage competing priorities and work effectively under pressure.
Excellent verbal communication and presentation skills.
Strong interpersonal and collaboration skills.
Adaptability and willingness to engage with new research areas.
WORKING LANGUAGE
Working proficiency in French is an advantage.
ABOUT THE ROLE
The Research Fellow will become a central part of Chatham House’s multidisciplinary Africa Programme team and contribute to research designed to inform decision-makers and shape discussions on issues affecting Africa and its regional and international relationships.
