ABOUT THE ASSIGNMENT
The Research Assistant will support the DISBURMA Study, a multi-centre retrospective cohort study examining severe malaria among children and adolescents aged 0 to 20 years.
The study will use routine hospital records from 18 selected health facilities across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones and will cover admissions between January 2021 and December 2025.
KEY OBJECTIVES
Estimate age-specific incidence, clinical presentations and case-fatality rates of severe malaria among children and adolescents aged 0 to 20 years.
Examine trends in severe malaria admissions and deaths by age, sex and SMC and non-SMC zones.
Identify key comorbidities and complications associated with severe malaria.
Assess differences in severe malaria burden and management practices across health facilities.
KEY DATA SOURCES
Research Assistants will extract information from relevant hospital records, including:
Inpatient medical records and case notes.
Laboratory registers.
Paediatric and emergency department logs.
Referral and discharge forms.
National severe malaria registers.
Data will be captured using SurveyCTO, an electronic data collection platform.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Receive briefing from the Malaria and Public Health team on the assignment.
Identify severe malaria cases from registers and case notes.
Work with medical record officers to retrieve relevant records.
Extract required information from primary data sources and submit it through the electronic data collection system.
Capture demographic, clinical, laboratory, treatment and outcome information.
Document information on severe malaria diagnosis and treatment.
Capture patient outcomes including recovery, discharge, death, absconding, discharge against medical advice and referral.
Record clinical signs and symptoms, vital signs and laboratory results where available.
Capture information on comorbidities and complications.
Record referral information and time from symptom onset to admission where available.
Respond to relevant data requests from the project’s technical team and key national and sub-national partners, including NMEP and SMEP.
EXPECTED DELIVERABLES
List of identified severe malaria cases at the assigned health facility.
Data extracted from all relevant primary data sources.
Complete submission of extracted data from identified records.
QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS
Minimum of a diploma in a health-related course with relevant experience in health service provision.
Bachelor’s degree or HND with relevant experience.
Currently working in the paediatric or medical ward of the project hospital as a staff member or volunteer.
Registered nurse or midwife, or holder of a diploma or degree in health-related sciences, or equivalent subject-matter experience.
Significant experience in inpatient care.
Experience using electronic platforms to capture and report data.
Familiarity with secondary, tertiary and private hospitals.
Excellent communication skills.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
Experience collaborating with government institutions, NGOs or academic institutions.
Understanding of diverse audiences and cultural contexts.
Training in health research ethics.
