POSITION: MONITORING AND EVALUATION OFFICER

LOCATION: KANO STATE, NIGERIA

EMPLOYMENT TYPE: FULL TIME, ON SITE

CONTRACT: 1 YEAR

PROBATION: 4 MONTHS, WITH EXTENSION SUBJECT TO PERFORMANCE

SALARY: ₦3,600,000 TO ₦4,800,000 PER YEAR

MONTHLY EQUIVALENT: ₦300,000 TO ₦400,000

SALARY IS BASED ON EXPERIENCE AND COST OF LIVING AND IS NEGOTIABLE FOR EXCEPTIONAL CANDIDATES.

First Embrace is a global health nonprofit working to save newborn lives by strengthening healthcare capacity in government hospitals in Nigeria.

The organisation focuses on implementing and institutionalising Kangaroo Mother Care KMC and supporting governments to improve care for vulnerable newborns.

ROLE OVERVIEW

First Embrace is seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented Monitoring and Evaluation Officer to support the quality, effectiveness and impact of its Kangaroo Care programmes.

The M&E Officer will collect, analyse and report programme data, conduct on-site monitoring, assess programme implementation and provide evidence-based recommendations for improvement.

The successful candidate will work closely with nursing staff, programme officers, hospital teams and beneficiaries while maintaining an independent and objective approach to monitoring and data collection.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. APP BASED DATA COLLECTION

Collect and manage primary and secondary data using the Dimagi CommCare app and First Embrace App.

  1. QUANTITATIVE DATA COLLECTION

Use observation checklists and semi-structured questionnaires to collect quantitative data across programme activities.

  1. BASELINE DATA COLLECTION

Collect baseline data to assess neonatal mortality at new hospitals and develop practical solutions to overcome data completeness and logistical challenges.

  1. QUALITATIVE DATA COLLECTION

Conduct interviews with families and healthcare staff using semi-structured questionnaires.

  1. DATA CONSISTENCY AND RELIABILITY

Identify and address inconsistencies and errors in data collected by nurses and other programme staff.

  1. DATA QUALITY ASSURANCE

Monitor data collected by nurses, provide guidance where necessary and conduct random checks to verify reported information.

  1. FEEDBACK AND SYSTEM IMPROVEMENT

Identify and report systemic issues that may affect programme outcomes.

  1. LEARNING AND DECISION MAKING

Use M&E findings to support programme managers and hospital teams in making data-driven decisions while maintaining an independent monitoring process.

  1. REPORTING

Participate in weekly and monthly M&E meetings to discuss findings, develop action plans and track improvements.

  1. M&E SYSTEM IMPROVEMENT

Contribute to the development and implementation of improved M&E processes in collaboration with managers.

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS

  1. Minimum BSc or equivalent degree in a relevant field.
  2. At least 3 years of professional experience in monitoring and evaluation of development, health or social impact programmes in Nigeria.
  3. Strong knowledge of current monitoring and evaluation principles and approaches.
  4. Experience using both quantitative and qualitative data collection methods.
  5. Experience collecting data using Android-based mobile applications, spreadsheets and data collection software.
  6. Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel.
  7. Working knowledge of data management and quality assurance or quality control.
  8. Ability to manage data consistently and reliably.
  9. Ability to adapt to a rapidly changing programme environment and manage multiple tasks while maintaining accuracy.
  10. Fluency in Hausa.
  11. Advanced level English.
  12. Strong alignment with the values of First Embrace.

DESIRABLE

  1. Master’s degree or professional certification in Monitoring and Evaluation.
  2. Previous experience in newborn health or other health programmes.
  3. Previous experience working in Kano, Katsina or Northern Nigeria.

WORKING HOURS

Full time.

Candidates should expect to work a minimum of 45 hours per week.

LOCATION REQUIREMENT

The successful candidate must be able to spend 100 percent of their working time in Kano State.
