Mapping of Biomedical Engineers in Nigeria – Federal Ministry of Health Initiative

The Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO), has launched a nationwide mapping exercise for Biomedical Engineers (BMEs) across Nigeria.

This important initiative is designed to provide a comprehensive and accurate overview of certified Biomedical Engineers operating across states, Local Government Areas (LGAs), and health institutions. The mapping will help identify the availability, distribution, and capacity of professionals responsible for supporting healthcare technology systems nationwide.

The primary objective of this exercise is to strengthen Nigeria’s healthcare system by improving coordination, identifying capacity gaps, and enhancing the maintenance and operation of hospital and laboratory equipment. It also supports efforts to ensure that healthcare facilities are equipped with properly managed and certified equipment, contributing to better service delivery and patient outcomes.

Additionally, the mapping will assist in determining training needs, guiding resource allocation, and promoting the recognition of Biomedical Engineers as critical contributors to healthcare delivery in Nigeria.

Who Should Participate:

All certified Biomedical Engineers currently practicing in Nigeria, whether in public or private health institutions, NGOs, or independent practice, are strongly encouraged to take part in this exercise.

Why This Matters:

• Provides reliable data for national healthcare planning
• Supports effective maintenance and management of medical equipment
• Identifies gaps in workforce capacity and distribution
• Guides future training and professional development programmes
• Enhances coordination across healthcare institutions
• Promotes recognition of Biomedical Engineers in the health sector

Call to Action:

Eligible Biomedical Engineers are requested to complete the mapping form accurately using up-to-date and verifiable information. The success of this initiative depends on the quality and completeness of the data submitted.

Participants are also encouraged to share this information widely with other certified Biomedical Engineers across Nigeria to ensure maximum participation and inclusiveness.
