About the Role
Shell Petroleum Development Company is seeking an experienced Instrument Technician to support safe, reliable, and optimized operations at SNG facilities. The role involves routine and complex maintenance, calibration, troubleshooting, and repair of field instrumentation, control systems, and automation equipment. The position provides hands-on technical support across field instrumentation maintenance, process automation and control, DELTAV DCS operations, engineering workstation support, and reliability improvement.
Key Responsibilities
Health, Safety, Environment and Compliance
Support Goal Zero targets by ensuring zero incidents, accidents, spills, and compliance breaches. Conduct site visits, complete unsafe act and unsafe condition reports, and close out actions.
Maintenance Systems Management and Field Instrumentation
- Execute preventive, corrective, and predictive maintenance on field instruments such as pressure, temperature, flow and level transmitters, switches, sensors, analyzers, and control valves
- Perform calibration, loop testing, functional checks, and instrument configuration in line with OEM standards
- Troubleshoot complex instrument faults, signal failures, wiring issues, and control loop abnormalities
- Update maintenance records, calibration reports, and job close-outs in the CMMS
- Provide instrumentation input into maintenance plans and job packs
Process Automation and Control Support
- Support stable plant operations through proper control loop maintenance and tuning
- Provide technical input during plant startups, shutdowns, and upset conditions
- Diagnose automation-related issues such as trips, oscillations, and alarm floods
- Implement control logic and parameter changes to improve performance and reliability
DELTAV DCS Operations and Engineering Workstation Support
- Operate and navigate the DELTAV DCS for process monitoring and alarm management
- Perform system health checks and troubleshoot controller and workstation issues
- Replace faulty hardware modules and restore system functionality
- Carry out backup and restore routines and support configuration updates
- Support integration and commissioning of new instruments and packages
- Ensure DELTAV documentation is updated following changes
Reliability and Continuous Improvement
- Support root cause analysis for recurring equipment failures
- Participate in reliability reviews, loop audits, and failure investigations
- Identify opportunities for cost optimization and improved maintenance effectiveness
- Support shutdowns, turnarounds, and reliability campaigns
- Ensure instrumentation tagging, drawings, and documentation are kept up to date
- Support Management of Change processes with technical input and implementation
Other Responsibilities
- Provide instrumentation support during project execution, commissioning, and handover
- Participate in audits and close out assigned actions
- Ensure compliance with SNG procedures, standards, OEM guidelines, and HSE requirements
- Maintain documentation such as loop drawings, instrument indexes, wiring diagrams, and as-built drawings
- Support training, competence assessments, and knowledge transfer within the instrumentation team
Qualifications and Experience
Education
HND in Instrumentation Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Automation and Control, or a related field. A bachelor’s degree is an added advantage.
Experience
- Five to eight years of experience in instrumentation and control maintenance or operations
- Strong hands-on experience with Emerson DELTAV DCS operations and maintenance
Technical Skills
- Strong skills in process control systems and automation
- Proficiency in DELTAV DCS hardware and software troubleshooting
- Ability to read and interpret P and IDs, loop drawings, wiring diagrams, and control narratives
- Good knowledge of control valves, positioners, transmitters, and analyzers
- Strong fault-finding and analytical skills
