Role Overview

The Health and Nutrition Specialist will provide strategic and technical leadership for health and nutrition programming within the Nigeria Country Office. The role focuses on strengthening programme quality supporting strategy development ensuring alignment with global standards and contributing to policy influence and programme expansion. The position also involves coordination with key stakeholders and supporting teams across multiple states.

Key Areas of Accountability

Strategy Integration and Proposal Development

Support the design and implementation of national health and nutrition strategies. Ensure all projects align with approved strategies plans and international standards. Promote integration and coordination across sectors including health nutrition WASH and child protection. Contribute to development of funding proposals to sustain and expand programmes.

Programme Support

Maintain a clear understanding of all health and nutrition projects across the country programme. Provide technical guidance to project teams and ensure quality implementation of activities. Support staff training on health and nutrition topics and participate in technical meetings. Conduct regular field visits and provide recommendations for programme improvement. Stay updated on national and global best practices and share knowledge with field teams.

Support recruitment of technical staff and provide input on staffing needs. Advise on budgeting and resource utilization to ensure efficient programme delivery.

Documentation and Reporting

Ensure timely production of high quality reports and documentation for donors and stakeholders. Review technical and programmatic content of reports studies and policy documents. Contribute to development of policies and ensure consistency with organisational approaches and standards.

Representation

Engage and coordinate with key stakeholders including government agencies development partners and research institutions at federal and state levels. Participate in development and review of national policies guidelines and frameworks related to health and nutrition. Represent Save the Children at national regional and international forums when required.

Management and Capacity Development

Provide line management and technical supervision to staff as required. Build capacity of health and nutrition teams across programmes and promote collaboration. Support staff learning and professional development through training and knowledge sharing.

Work Location and Travel

The role is based in Abuja and requires approximately 30 percent travel to other states within Nigeria.

Qualifications and Experience

Degree in Public Health Medicine Nutrition or a related field or equivalent experience. Minimum of 6 years experience in health and nutrition programming including humanitarian and development contexts with at least 2 years at advisory level.

Strong knowledge of health and nutrition interventions in emergency and development settings. Experience in coordination mechanisms and stakeholder engagement. Proven ability in strategic planning innovation and programme management. Experience supporting development of national policies and guidelines.

Skills and Competencies

Strong coordination and stakeholder management skills. Excellent communication and presentation abilities suitable for high level representation. Ability to develop high quality reports proposals and technical documents. Experience in staff management and remote technical support. Strong facilitation and training skills. Good interpersonal and negotiation skills.

Proficiency in Microsoft Office tools including word processing presentations and spreadsheets. Fluency in English is required. Knowledge of different regions in Nigeria and integrated programming approaches is an added advantage.
