ABOUT THE ROLE

The U.S. Embassy Abuja is seeking an eligible and qualified Consular Associate to join its Consular Section.

Under the direct supervision of the Consular Chief, the successful candidate will perform a range of responsibilities across the American Citizen Services, Nonimmigrant Visa, Immigrant Visa and Fraud Prevention Units.

The role involves providing consular services to U.S. citizens, supporting non-adjudicatory visa processing, assisting with investigation and validation activities, and handling correspondence with members of the public, attorneys, U.S. and host governments, Congress and other relevant parties.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Provide consular services to U.S. citizens.

Support non-adjudicatory visa processing.

Assist with investigations and validation studies.

Handle official correspondence with the public, attorneys, government institutions and other relevant stakeholders.

Input and manage information in consular systems accurately.

Identify and correct data entry errors.

Apply applicable regulations and procedures with accuracy and sound judgment.

Support activities across American Citizen Services, Nonimmigrant Visa, Immigrant Visa and Fraud Prevention Units.

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS

Completion of High School is required.

Minimum of 2 years of office administration experience is required.

Fluency in spoken, written and read English is required.

General understanding of U.S. policies related to consular and visa operations is required.

Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and general computer applications.

Knowledge of information and database management.

Strong organizational, task management and filing skills.

Good written communication skills, including the ability to prepare official correspondence and reports.

Good interpersonal skills.

Ability to deal tactfully and professionally with the public, including sensitive and difficult situations.

Ability to evaluate evidence carefully and apply complex regulations correctly.

Ability to learn applicable U.S. and host-country laws, regulations, legal precedents and court decisions.

Ability to input data into consular systems with minimum errors and identify errors made by others.

Ability to independently manage assigned tasks and responsibilities.

SECURITY REQUIREMENT

Selected candidates must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret-level security clearance.

All selected candidates will undergo a background investigation and may be required to complete a pre-employment medical examination.

The selected candidate must be able to begin work within a reasonable period of approximately 6 weeks after receiving the necessary authorization, clearances or certifications.

HIRING PREFERENCE

Hiring preference may be given to eligible applicants according to the U.S. Mission’s established preference order.

Preference categories include eligible family members who are preference-eligible U.S. Veterans, AEFM/USEFM applicants, and certain Foreign Service and Civil Service personnel with applicable reemployment rights.
