The BBC, a global multimedia broadcaster reaching over 320 million people weekly, is recruiting for the position of Assistant Editor, BBC Hausa as part of its ongoing expansion across Africa.
Based in Abuja, this full-time role sits within the BBC World Service and is central to the transformation of BBC Hausa into a digital-first, video-led platform designed to engage modern audiences across West Africa and the global Hausa-speaking diaspora.
Role Overview:
The Assistant Editor will play a key leadership role in evolving BBC Hausa’s editorial output, driving innovation in digital journalism while maintaining the highest editorial standards. The role focuses on delivering impactful, audience-focused content tailored for social media and mobile-first consumption.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead the transition to a digital-first, video-led newsroom, fostering a culture of innovation, accountability, and continuous learning
- Commission and deliver high-impact journalism, including exclusives, investigations, and explainers
- Collaborate with editorial teams across Nigeria to align coverage and maximise efficiency
- Develop and implement a data-driven video strategy to grow audience reach, especially among younger and female audiences
- Use analytics and audience insights to inform editorial decisions and content distribution
- Promote performance-driven journalism by guiding teams on engagement metrics and content optimisation
- Oversee the effective use of AI tools in editorial workflows while maintaining strict editorial control
Requirements:
- Proven experience managing and developing high-performing journalism teams
- Strong track record in producing impactful digital-first content
- Demonstrated success in driving audience growth through data-led video strategies
- Advanced knowledge of analytics, SEO, and platform performance
- Fluency in written and spoken Hausa with strong editorial judgment
