Action Against Hunger is recruiting an experienced Field Coordinator to provide strategic leadership, programme oversight, operational support, security management, government engagement and partnership development for its humanitarian interventions in Borno State.

ABOUT ACTION AGAINST HUNGER

Action Against Hunger is an international humanitarian organisation working to end hunger and address the needs of communities affected by conflict, disaster and other crises.

In Nigeria, Action Against Hunger has implemented integrated humanitarian and development programmes since 2010, including interventions in Health, Nutrition, Water, Sanitation and Hygiene, Mental Health and Psychosocial Support, Food Security and Livelihoods, and Social Protection.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. PROGRAMME MANAGEMENT AND STRATEGY

The Field Coordinator will:

  1. Lead relevant, integrated humanitarian and recovery programming in line with Action Against Hunger’s country strategy.
  2. Support the development of partnerships and alliances in the state.
  3. Oversee Project Cycle Management through line management of Programme Managers.
  4. Coordinate with technical Heads of Departments to ensure quality programme implementation.
  5. Ensure adequate operational support for programme activities.
  6. Explore opportunities for geographical and sectoral programme expansion.
  7. Coordinate assessments, evaluations, research and contextual analysis.
  8. Contribute to the development of concept notes and project proposals.
  9. Collaborate with Grants teams to develop quality donor proposals and reports.
  10. Contribute to resource mobilisation and donor engagement.
  11. Integrate humanitarian, socioeconomic and security analysis into programme planning and reporting.
  12. TEAM MANAGEMENT
  13. Lead, motivate and supervise field teams.
  14. Organise regular team meetings and provide regular updates.
  15. Develop and monitor individual action plans.
  16. Manage conflicts within teams and promote a positive working environment.
  17. Coordinate technical support and supervision visits.
  18. Follow up procurement and operational plans.
  19. Coordinate with Abuja-based support departments on finance, supply, recruitment and administration.
  20. Troubleshoot programme and operational challenges and develop practical solutions.
  21. Promote Action Against Hunger’s Charter, values and safeguarding standards.
  22. SECURITY AND SAFETY

The Field Coordinator will support the management of staff and asset security by:

  1. Updating security plans, SOPs, health procedures and evacuation arrangements.
  2. Maintaining formal and informal security networks.
  3. Briefing staff on security and contextual developments.
  4. Supporting crisis management and security analysis.
  5. Making appropriate decisions regarding field office safety in coordination with relevant security leadership.
  6. FINANCE, HUMAN RESOURCES AND LOGISTICS

The position will provide overall oversight and coordination of field support functions, including:

  1. Human Resources
  2. Finance
  3. Supply and procurement
  4. Fleet and movements
  5. Logistics
  6. Recruitment support
  7. Compliance with Action Against Hunger policies, donor regulations and national labour laws
  8. Weekly field coordination meetings
  9. REPRESENTATION AND STAKEHOLDER ENGAGEMENT
  10. Represent Action Against Hunger with government, humanitarian actors and other stakeholders.
  11. Participate in humanitarian and sector coordination mechanisms.
  12. Engage in Nutrition, Food Security and Livelihoods, WASH and other relevant coordination forums.
  13. Promote humanitarian principles and the Core Humanitarian Standard.
  14. Develop and maintain professional networks and information channels.
  15. Support advocacy on humanitarian needs and priorities.
  16. Ensure compliance with national laws and relevant regulations.
  17. PARTNERSHIP MANAGEMENT
  18. Map local implementing partners operating in the state.
  19. Contribute to partner selection and due diligence processes.
  20. Coordinate with contracted implementing partners.
  21. Identify and resolve partnership-related challenges.
  22. Support partner management and capacity strengthening.
  23. Coordinate partner training plans.
  24. Identify humanitarian and technical capacity-building needs.
  25. REPORTING, QUALITY AND ACCOUNTABILITY
  26. Provide the Country Leadership Team with required field reports and updates.
  27. Ensure monthly activity reports are properly documented.
  28. Review donor reports before submission to the Grants team and Abuja coordination office.
  29. Maintain project documentation for audits and organisational learning.
  30. Support surveys and assessments as required.
  31. Implement recommendations from internal and external assessments.
  32. Establish and maintain effective complaint and feedback mechanisms.
  33. Support quality control and continuous programme improvement.

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS

  1. Degree in Social Sciences, International Relations, International Development, Humanitarian Response or a related field.
  2. Minimum of 5 years’ experience working with international NGOs in insecure contexts.
  3. Previous Action Against Hunger emergency or post-emergency experience is an advantage.
  4. Strong leadership and team management skills.
  5. Ability to organise, train, motivate and manage large multicultural teams.
  6. Excellent communication, diplomacy and negotiation skills.
  7. Strong stakeholder engagement and networking abilities.
  8. Ability to work effectively with government, humanitarian organisations, partners and communities.
  9. Strong adaptability and resilience in challenging environments.
  10. Ability to work under pressure and respond positively to change and feedback.
  11. Sound judgement and decision-making skills.
  12. Strong problem-solving and analytical abilities.
  13. Ability to develop integrated strategies aligned with organisational objectives.
  14. Excellent writing, drafting and reporting skills.
  15. Ability to work independently while maintaining effective teamwork.
