2026 NEMA National Essay Competition

The National Emergency Management Agency has announced the launch of the 2026 NEMA National Essay Competition to engage young Nigerians on the importance of disaster preparedness emergency response and national resilience. The initiative aims to promote awareness and encourage proactive thinking about safety and collective responsibility in the face of emergencies. Additionally, participation in the 2026 NEMA National Essay Competition is an opportunity for students to showcase their understanding of critical issues in national management.

Across Nigeria incidents such as floods fires and building collapses continue to highlight the need for preparedness. The agency emphasizes that disasters often occur without warning and that awareness remains a key factor in reducing risks and saving lives. This competition is designed not only to test writing skills but also to shape how young people understand and respond to disaster related challenges. Notably, the 2026 NEMA National Essay Competition encourages students to focus their essays on the real experiences affecting their communities.

The competition is open to secondary school students tertiary institution students and members of the National Youth Service Corps Emergency Management Vanguards across the country. Each category has a specific topic to address. Secondary school students will write on My Role in Disaster Risk Reduction while tertiary students will focus on Climate Change and Disaster Management in Nigeria. Participants from the NYSC Emergency Management Vanguards will explore Technology for Disaster Response Opportunities and Challenges.

Essay submissions for secondary school students must not exceed 500 words. Entries from tertiary students and NYSC participants should not be more than 1000 words. Submissions will be evaluated based on relevance originality and clarity by experts in disaster risk management and communication.

Winners in each category will receive 500000 naira and a trophy. First runner up winners will receive 300000 naira while second runner up winners will receive 200000 naira. The top ten participants in each category will also receive certificates and recognition. Furthermore, the 2026 NEMA National Essay Competition recognises outstanding youth talent across Nigeria.

Submission Guidelines and Eligibility Criteria

To ensure a successful entry into the NEMA Essay Competition, all participants must strictly adhere to the following technical and eligibility requirements:

1. Technical Formatting:
• File Format: All essays must be submitted as a Microsoft Word document (.doc or .docx).
• Typography: Use Times New Roman font.
• Font Size: The body text must be set to Size 12.

2. Required Identification Details:
Every entry must clearly include the following information at the top of the document or in a dedicated cover page:
• Full Name: The official name of the contestant.
• Category: The specific category the participant is entering.
• Institutional Details: Relevant details of the participant’s School or current NYSC deployment (State, Batch, and PPA).

3. Submission Method:
• Completed essays and the required participant details should be sent via email to: nemaessay@nema.gov.ng

Submission Guidelines Eligibility
• Essays should be sent in as word document using Times New Roman, Size 12, as font type.

• Entries should include full name of contestant, category and details of their school or NYSC deployment.

The competition opened on April 1 2026 and will close on April 15 2026.
