The Alliance for International Medical Action (ALIMA) is an international medical humanitarian organization founded in 2009. It provides quality healthcare to communities affected by emergencies and health crises while advancing humanitarian medicine through research and innovation.
ALIMA works across several Nigerian states, providing healthcare and nutrition services and responding to disease outbreaks. In Ondo State, the organization supports Lassa fever treatment and research into improved medical interventions.
JOB SUMMARY
ALIMA is seeking a qualified Social Science Research Manager to coordinate and oversee social science research activities at study sites in Owo, Ondo State, and Irrua, Edo State.
The successful candidate will manage field investigators, coordinate qualitative research, oversee participant recruitment, ensure compliance with research ethics, lead qualitative data analysis and contribute to scientific reports and publications.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Manage the social science research team across both study sites.
- Coordinate the implementation of research activities and ensure high-quality outputs.
- Supervise qualitative data collection through observations and individual interviews.
- Organize training on study protocols, participant recruitment and data-collection tools.
- Supervise field investigators and ensure compliance with research ethics and confidentiality requirements.
- Oversee participant identification, recruitment and informed consent procedures.
- Ensure data quality, completeness, secure transfer and compliance with standard operating procedures.
- Lead qualitative data analysis and interpretation of findings.
- Prepare scientific reports, research papers and recommendations.
- Participate in research meetings and dissemination of study findings.
- Prepare activity reports for the research leadership when required.
QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS
Applicants must possess:
- A PhD in Human and Social Sciences, such as Sociology, Psychology or Anthropology, Public Health, Global Health, or an equivalent qualification.
- At least five years of relevant professional experience.
- Experience conducting or supervising in-depth semi-structured interviews and interview transcription.
- Strong leadership, communication, organizational and teamwork skills.
- Excellent analytical and scientific writing abilities.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and qualitative data-analysis software such as MAXQDA.
- Knowledge of Lassa fever and its impact on affected communities.
- Understanding of the sociocultural, political, religious and epidemiological contexts of Ondo and Edo States.
- Ability to communicate effectively in English and the main Nigerian languages spoken in Owo and Irrua.
- Strong commitment to research ethics, participant confidentiality and data quality.
Experience implementing and evaluating interventions or researching stigma associated with epidemic diseases is an advantage.
