RESEARCH AND SCALING OFFICER

Health Progress Hub HPH is hiring one or two Research and Scaling Officers to support high-impact global health organisations with country prioritisation, applied research and research management.

This is a remote contractor opportunity for candidates interested in global health, development, health policy and applied research.

CONTRACT

Initial 6-month contract, with a strong possibility of extension. HPH is also open to discussing a longer contract from the start.

COMPENSATION

Relevant experience: USD 16 to USD 25 per hour

Early-career candidates: USD 10 to USD 16 per hour

The current team is paid USD 21 per hour, and HPH is open to a higher rate for exceptional candidates.

ABOUT THE ROLE

The Research and Scaling Officer will help high-impact charities decide where to launch and expand their programmes and manage research projects conducted by emerging leaders from low- and middle-income countries.

The successful candidate may work with charity founders, senior advisors, government officials, researchers and other leaders in global health.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Prioritisation Research

Review country prioritisation models, resources and underlying data.

Build or refine weighted factor models to help organisations systematically compare countries.

Conduct detailed research on potential countries, including disease burden, health systems, regulations, partners, costs and operating conditions.

Support HPH’s internal strategy on which global health problems to prioritise.

  1. Research Management

Keep research projects on track by reviewing research questions, plans and expected outputs.

Review projects at midpoint and completion.

Provide written and verbal feedback to researchers and mentors.

Help promising research projects continue beyond the initial programme through HPH, partner organisations or the original research team.

  1. Research Strategy

Improve HPH’s methods and quality standards for prioritisation research.

Develop research agendas across areas including lead exposure, transformative AI and global health, market shaping for essential medicines, and health systems strengthening.

Identify opportunities for HPH to support researchers and research organisations working on high-impact issues.

IDEAL CANDIDATE

HPH is looking for exceptional people rather than candidates who simply tick every box.

Applicants should demonstrate:

  1. Ability to quickly understand new projects, questions, deliverables and constraints.
  2. Strong project management and organisational skills.
  3. Ability to manage multiple projects with limited supervision.
  4. Experience taking work from an open research question through to an output used for decision-making.
  5. Applied research or analysis experience in global health, development or health policy.
  6. Ability to provide direct and useful written and verbal feedback.
  7. Strong judgement and willingness to re-scope projects when necessary.
  8. Strong interest in creating measurable impact in global health.
  9. Experience starting, improving or fixing a project, team or process.

USEFUL BUT NOT REQUIRED

Experience managing other people’s research.

Experience with country prioritisation or weighted factor models.

Knowledge of health systems in low- and middle-income countries.

Experience with organisations such as Ambitious Impact, GiveWell-backed charities, J-PAL or Innovations for Poverty Action.

Experience using AI tools for research and analysis.

Experience working in a small or newly established organisation.
