Action Against Hunger Nigeria is recruiting a MAMI Officer to provide technical oversight, clinical quality assurance and field-level implementation of the Management of Small and Nutritionally At-Risk Infants Under 6 Months of Age and Their Mothers (MAMI) approach.

The successful candidate will support quality care for vulnerable infants under 6 months and their mothers while strengthening health facility and community-based MAMI services.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. MAMI IMPLEMENTATION AND CLINICAL QUALITY

Implement and update operational plans for MAMI activities across supported health facilities and communities.

Ensure quality clinical and nutritional care for at-risk infants under 6 months and their mothers.

Supervise community screening, triage, admission, clinical assessment, counselling and referral.

Support integration of MAMI into Primary Health Care services, including ANC, PNC, EPI, IMCI and maternity services.

Supervise infant screening and assessment, including growth monitoring, clinical vulnerability and breastfeeding or feeding difficulties.

Provide and supervise breastfeeding and lactation support, including exclusive breastfeeding, relactation, breast milk expression and management of common breast conditions.

Ensure maternal nutrition, MUAC, micronutrient supplementation, postpartum care and psychosocial distress screening are incorporated into care.

Identify danger signs and ensure timely referral of complicated cases to inpatient or stabilization services.

Conduct supportive supervision and clinical coaching for health facility and community nutrition workers.

  1. TRAINING AND TECHNICAL MENTORSHIP

Assess training and competency gaps among nurses, midwives, CHEWs and community nutrition volunteers.

Develop and facilitate practical training, mentorship and refresher sessions.

Provide training on infant and maternal assessment, anthropometry and clinical triage.

Support breastfeeding assessment and lactation counselling.

Train health workers on safe cup feeding, supplementary suckling techniques and non-breastfed infant management.

Support training on maternal nutrition, postpartum care and integration with MHPSS services.

Conduct case reviews and continuous coaching during facility visits.

Support SPHCDA capacity building to strengthen ownership and sustainability of MAMI services.

  1. TEAM LEADERSHIP AND COMMUNITY MOBILIZATION

Coordinate and supervise facility MAMI focal staff and community mobilizers.

Develop weekly and monthly movement and duty rosters.

Lead operational review meetings covering caseloads, defaulter tracing and implementation challenges.

Ensure appropriate and culturally sensitive counselling spaces for mothers and infants.

Supervise community-based screening and home visits for discharged mother-infant pairs and infants failing to thrive.

Support staff performance evaluations and objective setting.

Ensure safety and security procedures are followed during field activities.

  1. SUPPLY CHAIN AND RESOURCE MANAGEMENT

Monitor MAMI-specific equipment, commodities and supplies.

Ensure appropriate storage and rational use of programme resources.

Prepare purchase requisitions and stock requests in coordination with Logistics and Programme teams.

Monitor essential medications, therapeutic supplies and maternal supplements.

Alert the Programme Manager about potential stock-outs and supply challenges.

  1. MONITORING, EVALUATION AND REPORTING

Maintain accurate MAMI registers, databases and mother-infant records.

Supervise the use of clinical recording tools, registers, tally sheets and dyad cards.

Compile and validate monthly facility data.

Monitor key indicators including admissions, cure rate, defaulter rate, referral rate, weight gain and breastfeeding outcomes.

Provide inputs for monthly Activity Progress Reports and donor reports.

Participate in data review meetings with SPHCDA and LGA teams.

Support baseline and endline assessments, nutrition surveys and qualitative evaluations.

Document lessons learned, success stories and clinical case studies.

  1. INTEGRATION AND STAKEHOLDER ENGAGEMENT

Strengthen linkages between MAMI, reproductive health, IMCI, MHPSS, FSL and WASH services.

Collaborate with MHPSS teams to establish referral pathways for mothers experiencing psychological distress.

Work with Health, Nutrition and WASH teams to promote hygiene and access to clean water.

Represent Action Against Hunger at relevant LGA nutrition and primary healthcare coordination meetings.

Engage traditional, religious and community leaders to build trust and encourage early health-seeking behaviour.

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS

Bachelor’s degree in Nursing, Midwifery, Public Health, Nutrition and Dietetics or another relevant field.

Minimum of 2 years’ relevant experience in a similar position.

Experience in MAMI, IYCF-E, Inpatient Stabilization Care, IMAM, Neonatal and Child Survival, IMCI or KMC interventions.

Experience in public health and IMAM programming.

Demonstrated experience providing clinical mentorship and adult-learning training to health facility workers.

Excellent report-writing skills.

Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.

Fluent written and spoken English and Hausa.

Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

Willingness to work under difficult and challenging conditions.

Ability and willingness to live and work in an uncertain security environment.
