The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) promotes regional integration, democracy, stability, and economic cooperation among its member states. ECOWAS plays a critical role in poverty reduction, migration management, and fostering tolerance and openness in West Africa.

1. Vice President of the ECOWAS Commission

Location: Abuja, Nigeria

Type: Full Time

Qualifications: BA/BSc/HND – MBA/MSC/MA

Salary: USD 13,268.89 – USD 19,066.90 annually

Role Overview:

The Vice-President assists the President of the Commission in executing his/her duties and acts in his/her absence. The position involves designing, implementing, and monitoring regional strategies, programs, and projects while coordinating with ECOWAS institutions, partners, and Member States.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist the President in defining and implementing the Commission’s strategy and programs
  • Ensure business continuity in the President’s absence
  • Coordinate and monitor regional programs and relationships with other ECOWAS institutions
  • Oversee institutional reform processes
  • Supervise the Directorate of Strategic Planning, Early Warning, and related directorates
  • Contribute to communication initiatives around the ECOWAS Vision
  • Perform additional duties assigned by the President of the Commission

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • Master’s degree or equivalent in Economics, Statistics, Law, Public Administration, Social Sciences, Engineering, Business Management, or related field
  • Fifteen years of professional experience, including seven years in senior management positions
  • Knowledge of ECOWAS agenda, programs, and institutional reforms
  • Proficiency in English, French, or Portuguese, with working knowledge of a second ECOWAS language
  • Strong IT skills including Microsoft Office

  • Managerial ability in multicultural environments
  • Skills in negotiation, coordination, monitoring, evaluation, and partnership development

Evaluation Process:

Applicants will undergo reference checks and further screening by the ECOWAS Ministerial Screening Committee.

Tenure: Fixed term of four years, non-renewable

2. Judge, ECOWAS Community Court of Justice

Location: Abuja, Nigeria

Salary: USD 6,246.50 – USD 17,366.81 annually

Tenure: Four-year fixed term, non-renewable

Role Overview:

Judges ensure adherence to ECOWAS law, interpret treaties, adjudicate disputes between member states, institutions, and individuals, and contribute to the development of regional jurisprudence.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Hear, deliberate, and adjudicate cases under ECOWAS legal instruments
  • Interpret and apply the ECOWAS Treaty, Protocols, and Supplementary Acts
  • Participate in drafting and delivering judgments, rulings, and advisory opinions
  • Protect and promote human rights as per regional and international law
  • Uphold judicial independence, integrity, and impartiality
  • Manage case flow and ensure compliance with Court procedures
  • Contribute to strategic planning and Court visibility initiatives
  • Collaborate with fellow judges, the Chief Registrar, and staff

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • Qualification for appointment to a Supreme Court or equivalent judicial position, or a Master of Laws specializing in International, Community, or Integration Law
  • Minimum 20 years professional experience as a Judge, Lawyer/Legal Counsel, or Academic in relevant fields
  • Proven good moral character

Competencies:

  • Professionalism, planning, and organizational skills
  • Ability to work in multicultural environments, manage teams, and resolve conflicts
  • Strong communication, fairness, and ethical conduct

Evaluation Process:
