ABOUT PREMIÈRE URGENCE INTERNATIONALE

Première Urgence Internationale PUI is an international humanitarian, non-governmental, non-profit, non-political, and non-religious organization providing assistance to people affected by marginalization, exclusion, conflict, natural disasters, and economic crises.

PUI has been operating in Nigeria since 2016, initially establishing its presence in Borno State before expanding its humanitarian operations to locations including Maiduguri, Monguno, Pulka, and Katsina.

JOB SUMMARY

The Midwife will work under the direct supervision of the Health and Nutrition Supervisor to provide quality Maternal, Newborn and Child Health MNCH and Sexual and Reproductive Health SRH services.

The successful candidate will provide antenatal care, postnatal care, basic emergency obstetric and neonatal care, family planning, health education, referrals, and other relevant services in line with PUI protocols and universal standards.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Prepare medical materials and ensure that all required items are available before activities begin.
  2. Conduct antenatal consultations, including screening tests and identification of pregnancy risk factors.
  3. Conduct deliveries according to approved protocols, hygiene standards, and safety precautions.
  4. Provide postnatal consultations during the six weeks following delivery and refer patients requiring secondary care.
  5. Provide family planning consultations, counselling, and services according to established protocols.
  6. Administer appropriate prophylactic treatments to pregnant women.
  7. Verify tetanus vaccination status of pregnant women.
  8. Manage SRH emergency cases in collaboration with the Health Supervisor.
  9. Identify survivors of Sexual and Gender-Based Violence SGBV and coordinate appropriate care with the medical team.
  10. Provide patients with clear information about diagnoses, treatment, and follow-up requirements.
  11. Provide individual health promotion and health education sessions.
  12. Support outbreak response activities and other health interventions as assigned.
  13. Maintain accurate patient records, medical prescriptions, and clinical documentation.
  14. Support proper waste management and maintain a clean and presentable working environment.
  15. Participate in vaccination, surveys, and other programme activities when required.

REFERRAL AND FOLLOW-UP

The Midwife will support emergency and elective referrals in accordance with PUI referral procedures, including coordination of transportation, appointments, laboratory investigations, and specialist consultations.

The role also involves following up referred patients, monitoring outcomes, ensuring continuity of care, and referring patients who require mental health support.

DATA COLLECTION AND REPORTING

The successful candidate will:

  1. Accurately document patient history, examinations, investigations, treatment, and clinical management.
  2. Maintain patient registration records.
  3. Track relevant epidemiological data on a daily basis.
  4. Monitor the consumption and use of medicines and medical supplies.
  5. Collect relevant information regarding patients’ living conditions.
  6. Contribute to weekly medical statistics and reports.
  7. Provide clear verbal and written handovers at the end of each shift.
  8. Report any loss, damage, shortage, theft, or other issue involving medical equipment, medicines, patients, or programme activities.
  9. Inform the supervisor about operational and medical needs.

TEAMWORK AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

The Midwife will participate in relevant trainings, meetings, coordination activities, and other professional development opportunities aimed at improving the quality and efficiency of care.

The successful candidate is also expected to contribute positively to team cohesion and maintain professional relationships with colleagues and patients.
