Department Overview

The Finance Department at Mercy Corps is responsible for managing all financial operations, including accounting, payroll, budgeting, financial reporting, banking, and compliance with donor and organizational policies. The department supports program teams by ensuring efficient and transparent use of financial resources.

Position Summary

The Finance Assistant will support financial operations under the supervision of the Finance & Compliance Officer. The role focuses on ensuring compliance with financial policies, maintaining accurate records, and strengthening internal control systems.

The successful candidate will play a key role in accounting processes, payroll management, financial reporting, and ensuring adherence to donor and organizational requirements.

Key Responsibilities

1. Financial Operations & Compliance

  • Support implementation and improvement of internal financial control systems
  • Ensure compliance with donor regulations and Mercy Corps policies
  • Assist in identifying and correcting compliance gaps

2. Accounting & Data Entry

  • Accurately enter financial transactions into accounting systems
  • Ensure correct coding using chart of accounts and budgets
  • Perform regular checks to identify and correct miscoding errors

3. Payroll & Statutory Remittances

  • Prepare payroll-related statutory payments (PAYE, pensions, NHF, NSITF, WHT)
  • Upload payroll data and ensure timely processing
  • Maintain proper documentation of remittances

4. Banking & Reconciliation

  • Prepare and reconcile bank accounts (Naira and USD)
  • Process payments and monitor cash balances
  • Support cheque submissions and bank correspondence

5. Reporting & Documentation

  • Support monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reporting
  • Maintain proper filing and archiving of financial documents
  • Assist with audit preparation and ensure audit readiness

6. Asset & Financial Tracking

  • Track prepaid expenses and amortizations
  • Maintain updated financial records and documentation
  • Ensure proper tax deductions and compliance with statutory requirements

7. General Support

  • Assist in month-end and year-end closing processes
  • Provide support to field offices and program teams
  • Carry out additional duties as assigned by the supervisor

Requirements

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree or HND in Finance, Accounting, or a related field

Experience

  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience in finance or compliance
  • Experience with international NGOs is preferred
  • Familiarity with accounting systems and general ledger software

Skills & Competencies

  • Strong understanding of accounting principles and financial processes
  • High level of accuracy and attention to detail
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Ability to meet deadlines and handle multiple tasks
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

Technical Skills

  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and other MS Office tools
  • Experience with financial management systems

Language

  • Fluency in written and spoken English

  • Reports To: Finance & Compliance Officer
  • Works With: Finance, program, and operations teams
