JOB ALERT: AGRONOMIST. This position is offered by the Foundation for Sustainable Smallholder Solutions (FSSS).
The Foundation for Sustainable Smallholder Solutions (FSSS) is recruiting an Agronomist to provide technical support, farmer training and agricultural extension services to smallholder farmers.
Location: Northern Bauchi State, Nigeria
Reports To: Senior Agronomist
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provide agronomic support and extension services to farmers cultivating cereals, legumes and vegetables.
- Establish and manage demonstration plots to promote improved farming practices and technologies.
- Train farmers on Good Agricultural Practices (GAPs), Integrated Pest Management (IPM), soil fertility management and climate-smart agriculture.
- Support farmer groups with record keeping, yield monitoring and production planning.
- Facilitate access to quality seeds, fertilizers, crop protection products and agricultural service providers.
- Support post-harvest handling and storage to reduce losses.
- Conduct field visits, monitor crop performance and collect agronomic and yield data.
- Prepare field reports, document success stories and contribute to research and agricultural innovation.
- Engage community leaders, extension officers, farmer organisations and other stakeholders.
- Support the implementation and expansion of the FSSS Farmers’ Hub Model.
REQUIREMENTS
- B.Sc. in Agriculture, Agricultural Extension, Agricultural Economics, Plant Breeding, Agribusiness or a related discipline.
- Minimum of 2 years of relevant experience in agronomy, crop production, agricultural extension or smallholder farmer support.
- Experience working with international organisations, development agencies, research institutions or NGOs.
- Strong understanding of agricultural systems, livelihoods and rural development.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
- Practical knowledge of digital data collection tools such as ODK, KoboToolbox and Soluta.
- Strong farmer engagement, analytical, problem-solving and decision-making skills.
