ABOUT INTERNATIONAL ALERT

International Alert is one of the world’s leading peacebuilding organisations, with over 30 years of experience supporting communities, governments, organisations and companies to build peace in conflict-affected and threatened areas.

International Alert is seeking qualified young Nigerian professionals from the Northeast, Northwest and North-Central regions to participate in its six-month internship programme.

The programme will provide practical experience in programme implementation, peacebuilding, conflict prevention, research, communications, advocacy and organisational processes.

INTERNSHIP STREAMS

1. PROGRAMMES INTERNSHIP

Programme Interns will support teams working on peacebuilding and development projects.

Key responsibilities include:

1. Supporting project planning and implementation.
2. Assisting with trainings, workshops, community dialogues, meetings and consultations.
3. Supporting activity logistics, participant coordination and stakeholder engagement.
4. Assisting with monitoring, data collection, attendance records, feedback forms and assessments.
5. Supporting activity reports, meeting minutes, field visit reports and programme updates.
6. Documenting results, lessons learned, good practices and stories of change.
7. Maintaining organised programme files and supporting coordination with communities, CSOs, government institutions and other stakeholders.
8. COMMUNICATIONS AND ADVOCACY INTERNSHIP

Communications and Advocacy Interns will support the documentation and communication of International Alert’s work.

Key responsibilities include:

1. Developing content for websites and social media platforms.
2. Documenting programme stories, achievements, case studies and stories of change.
3. Supporting media engagement and maintaining media contacts.
4. Monitoring media coverage and compiling media mentions.
5. Assisting with social media content calendars, photography and activity documentation.
6. Conducting research and supporting advocacy briefs, talking points and presentations.
7. Supporting policy and public discourse monitoring.
8. Working with Programme and Communications teams to communicate evidence, achievements and impact.

LEARNING AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Interns will gain practical exposure to:

1. Programme and project management.
2. Peacebuilding and conflict-sensitive programming.
3. Research, writing and analytical work.
4. Communications and advocacy.
5. Stakeholder engagement.
6. Monitoring, reporting and documentation.
7. Field activities and organisational processes.
8. Professional networking within the development and peacebuilding sector.

Each intern will be assigned a supervisor for guidance, support and periodic feedback.

ELIGIBILITY AND REQUIREMENTS

Applicants must:

1. Be Nigerian citizens.
2. Have completed the mandatory one-year NYSC programme and provide evidence of completion.
3. Hold a minimum of a Bachelor’s degree from a recognised tertiary institution.
4. Be from, or have strong ties to, the Northeast, Northwest or North-Central region of Nigeria.
5. Demonstrate interest in peacebuilding, conflict prevention, development, communications, advocacy or related fields.
6. Have good written and verbal communication skills.
7. Be proficient in basic Microsoft Office applications.
8. Be willing to learn and work collaboratively.
9. Be available for the full six-month internship.
10. Demonstrate professionalism, integrity and commitment to International Alert’s values.

DESIRED COMPETENCIES

Strong communication and interpersonal skills, writing and editing ability, research and analytical skills, attention to detail, creativity, initiative, organisation, teamwork and willingness to learn are desirable.

For Communications and Advocacy Interns, knowledge of social media, basic graphic design, photography, videography or digital storytelling will be an added advantage.

LOCATION AND FIELD TRAVEL

The internship will be based in Abuja. Interns may be required to undertake field travel in accordance with International Alert’s security procedures and operational requirements.
