Apply to the Green Leaders Fellowship
The Green Institute is launching the Officially Green Leaders Fellowship, a fully funded national initiative. It is designed to identify and develop one exceptional sustainability leader from each of Nigeria’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory. This immersive fellowship brings together emerging climate advocates, sustainability professionals, and community change-makers for an intensive week of advanced leadership training. In addition, it includes strategic collaboration and structured action planning.
The fellowship selects 37 outstanding leaders through a competitive, merit-based process. Selected fellows will participate in a high-impact residential program focused on strengthening climate governance. The program equips participants with practical tools for policy engagement and developing state-level sustainability strategies. Moreover, it includes establishing Officially Green State Sustainability Cabinets. Upon completing the residency, each fellow will return to their state as an Officially Green State Lead. That person will be responsible for implementing a 12-month sustainability action blueprint.
The residency covers several thematic areas, including energy transition and green innovation, circular economy models, renewable energy systems, sustainable enterprise, climate finance, climate leadership and governance, subnational environmental policy, SDG localization, and strategic advocacy and communication. Fellows will also design and structure their State Sustainability Cabinet. Leadership roles will include Renewable Energy Lead, Circular Economy Lead, Climate Education Coordinator, Biodiversity and Conservation Officer, Community Engagement Director, and Research and Policy Analyst.
The fellowship is fully funded, providing residential accommodation, meals, and transportation to and from the residency location. This ensures equitable participation. Selected fellows will contribute to a major national sustainability activation. As a result, this will position Nigeria prominently in global climate leadership.
Ideal applicants are visionary individuals with a proven commitment to sustainability, leadership experience or potential, capacity to mobilize stakeholders, and dedication to measurable impact. Applicants may come from civil society, academia, public service, the private sector, or grassroots initiatives.
Fellowship outcomes include operational State Sustainability Cabinets, coordinated national sustainability campaigns, state-level environmental initiatives, strengthened youth-led climate advocacy, and a unified national network of sustainability leaders.
Applications for the 2026 cohort are now open. The deadline is August 26, 2026. One fellow will be selected from each state and the FCT through a competitive merit-based process. Apply via: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeq_DopHotVynfWFDDTsX5rN-tnubTkOhe68AttOKX7JDwZAQ/viewform?pli=1.
