The successful candidate will support the implementation of protection activities at field level, helping to ensure that services are delivered in a safe, dignified, inclusive, and accountable manner.

🌍 ABOUT PUI
Première Urgence Internationale is a non-governmental, non-profit, non-political, and non-religious international humanitarian organisation that supports civilians affected by marginalisation, exclusion, natural disasters, conflict, and economic crises.
PUI has operated in Nigeria since 2016, initially establishing its presence in Borno State. Its humanitarian operations have expanded to locations including Maiduguri, Monguno, Pulka, and Katsina State.
Its programmes include health, nutrition, protection, psychosocial support, sexual and reproductive health, Gender-Based Violence (GBV) services, and community-based humanitarian assistance.
🎯 ROLE PURPOSE
Working under the direct supervision of the Protection Officer, the Protection Assistant will support the delivery of field-level protection activities.
The role will involve protection monitoring, information provision, referrals, community engagement, strengthening community-based protection structures, and promoting accountability to affected populations.
The successful candidate will maintain regular contact with communities, identify protection risks, and support timely responses through appropriate referrals and coordination with relevant service providers and humanitarian actors.
🔧 KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
📍 Programme Implementation & Quality
The Protection Assistant will:
- Support protection activities in accordance with PUI standards and protection principles.
- Conduct protection monitoring through household visits, Key Informant Interviews (KIIs), Focus Group Discussions (FGDs), safety audits, and service mapping.
- Identify and report protection risks, trends, and incidents.
- Support protection helpdesks at health and nutrition facilities.
- Provide accurate information about available services.
- Conduct basic protection screening.
- Refer individuals to appropriate services.
- Deliver awareness and information sessions on GBV, child protection, rights, available services, and other protection topics.
- Support life-skills and community-engagement activities.
- Assist with community meetings, dialogues, and outreach activities.
- Ensure beneficiaries understand their rights to provide feedback and submit complaints safely and confidentially.
🔗 Referrals & Protection Support
The successful candidate will:
- Identify individuals with protection concerns.
- Facilitate safe and confidential referrals to internal and external service providers.
- Ensure referrals comply with established SOPs.
- Respect confidentiality and data-protection principles.
- Conduct basic follow-up to determine whether referred individuals have accessed services, without undertaking case management unless specifically trained or assigned.
- Maintain updated knowledge of local services and referral pathways.
- Coordinate with health, nutrition, and other sector teams to promote integrated support.
🤝 Community-Based Protection & Engagement
Responsibilities will include:
- Supporting the establishment and strengthening of Community-Based Protection Networks (CBPNs).
- Working with community leaders, volunteers, and women-led groups.
- Identifying protection concerns and community-based solutions.
- Facilitating regular community engagement and feedback.
- Supporting community protection initiatives and action plans.
- Promoting trust and acceptance of PUI within communities.
📊 Data Collection, Reporting & Documentation
The Protection Assistant will:
- Collect and record protection activity data using approved paper or digital tools such as Kobo.
- Ensure data is accurate, complete, and submitted on time.
- Maintain confidential and secure documentation.
- Contribute to weekly and monthly activity reports.
- Immediately report urgent protection incidents to the Protection Officer and Supervisor.
- Record and track helpdesk enquiries, complaints, and feedback.
- Escalate unresolved or sensitive issues appropriately.
- Coordinate with the MEAL team to ensure feedback and complaints are properly recorded and followed up through the relevant accountability mechanisms.
🛡️ Protection Mainstreaming & Safe Programming
The successful candidate will support the integration of protection principles across field activities by:
- Identifying and reporting risks associated with service delivery.
- Promoting safe, inclusive, and accessible services.
- Supporting other sector teams in identifying and referring protection concerns.
- Promoting survivor-centred and dignified approaches where applicable.
🏢 Representation, Logistics & Administration
The role will also involve:
- Maintaining positive relationships with community leaders, service providers, and stakeholders.
- Representing PUI appropriately during field activities.
- Coordinating with other PUI departments.
- Supporting logistical preparations for activities.
- Preparing materials, venues, and participant arrangements.
- Properly using and maintaining tablets, forms, and other work tools.
- Reporting operational needs and challenges to the Protection Officer.

🎓 MANDATORY QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
Education
Candidates should possess at least a Bachelor’s Degree in:
- Social Sciences
- Political Science
- Law
- Psychology
- Social Work
- International Development
- A related discipline
💼 Work Experience
Applicants should have at least 1–2 years of relevant professional experience in:

🧠 KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS
Candidates should demonstrate:
- Basic understanding of protection principles and community-based approaches.
- Experience in community outreach, awareness raising, or data collection.
- Familiarity with protection monitoring tools, including FGDs, KIIs, household assessments, and individual incident/safety assessments.
- Understanding of referral pathways and confidentiality principles.
- Basic knowledge of GBV guiding principles is desirable.
- Ability to communicate effectively with diverse communities.
- Strong interpersonal and teamwork skills.
