JOB PURPOSE

COOPI is seeking an experienced Forestry and Natural Resource Management Officer to lead ecosystem restoration and climate resilience activities in conflict-affected communities.

The role will focus on reforestation, watershed management, land reclamation and agroforestry while supporting sustainable livelihoods and peacebuilding.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Lead community-based reforestation and afforestation activities across 8 LGAs.
2. Oversee the planting and monitoring of 200,000 trees, including tree survival and biodiversity outcomes.
3. Support land reclamation and nursery development with local stakeholders.
4. Promote carbon sequestration practices and support access to carbon financing mechanisms.
5. Deliver training on sustainable land management, agroforestry and climate-smart agriculture.
6. Support orchard establishment in secure community locations, including schools.
7. Provide technical support and tools for community-led restoration activities.
8. Collaborate with Ministries of Environment, Agriculture and Land to strengthen natural resource management practices.
9. Support the establishment and revitalisation of local NRM committees and sustainability agreements.
10. Contribute to environmental governance policy dialogue and awareness campaigns.
11. Monitor indicators including tree survival rates, community participation and restoration outcomes.
12. Contribute to MEAL activities, including baseline, midterm and endline evaluations.
13. Document lessons learned, success stories and technical reports for donors and internal use.

REQUIREMENTS

1. Bachelor’s Degree in Forestry, Environmental Science, Natural Resource Management or a related field.
2. Minimum 5 years of experience in ecosystem restoration, agroforestry or watershed management.
3. Proven experience in community mobilisation and capacity building.
4. Knowledge of carbon financing, climate-smart agriculture and land-use planning.
5. Strong understanding of conflict-sensitive programming and Do No Harm principles.
6. Strong facilitation and training skills.
7. Excellent coordination and stakeholder engagement abilities.
8. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
9. Ability to work independently and collaboratively in high-pressure environments.
10. Commitment to gender, disability and social inclusion principles.

DESIRABLE

Experience working in Northern Nigeria or similar fragile contexts.

Knowledge of local languages and cultural dynamics.

Experience with donor-funded projects, particularly FCDO-funded programmes or similar.
