ABOUT THE SCHOLARSHIP
The Swiss Confederation awards Swiss Government Excellence Scholarships every year to promote international exchange and research cooperation between Switzerland and countries around the world.
The scholarships are awarded by the Federal Commission for Scholarships for Foreign Students (FCS).
The programme is mainly intended for talented early-career researchers from abroad who have already completed a Master’s degree.
SCHOLARSHIP TYPES
- RESEARCH SCHOLARSHIP
Target Group: PhD students and postgraduate researchers
Main Requirements:
Master’s degree
Academic supervisor in Switzerland
Maximum Duration: 12 months
Applicants can conduct research in any discipline at eligible Swiss institutions, including cantonal universities, universities of applied sciences, ETH Zurich, EPFL and research institutes within the ETH Domain.
Applicants must have the support of an academic supervisor in Switzerland who is willing to guide the proposed research.
- PHD SCHOLARSHIP
Target Group: PhD students
Main Requirements:
Master’s degree
Academic supervisor
Maximum Duration: 36 months
- ART SCHOLARSHIP
Target Group: Art students
Main Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree
Admission or proof of application to an eligible Swiss institution
Maximum Duration: 21 months
This scholarship is available only to applicants from a limited number of eligible countries.
FUNDING
Scholarship recipients receive funding of up to CHF 2,450 per month, subject to the applicable scholarship conditions.
WHO SHOULD CONSIDER APPLYING?
The programme is primarily designed for talented international early-career researchers who have completed a Master’s degree and wish to pursue research or further academic development in Switzerland.
Applicants should carefully check the scholarship category, country-specific eligibility requirements, deadlines and required documents applicable to their country of origin.
APPLICATION PROCESS
Applications are submitted through the designated Swiss diplomatic representations.
The Federal Commission for Scholarships for Foreign Students assesses applications based on:
- Candidate profile
- Quality of the research project or artistic work
- Synergies and potential for future research cooperation

IMPORTANT: SCHOLARSHIP FRAUD WARNING
The Swiss authorities have warned applicants about fake scholarship offers circulated through emails and social media.
The Swiss Government Excellence Scholarship application is FREE OF CHARGE.
