Payroll Consultant (2 Openings) – British Council | Abuja & Lagos
The British Council, the UK’s international organisation for cultural relations and educational opportunities, is recruiting two Payroll Consultants for its offices in Abuja (FCT) and Lagos, Nigeria. The organisation operates in over 100 countries and focuses on building trust and collaboration through education, arts, culture, and civil society initiatives.
This role is offered on a one-year fixed-term contract and sits within the organisation’s People Services & Solutions (PS&S) shared services structure.
Role Overview
The Payroll Consultant is responsible for managing end-to-end payroll operations across multiple countries, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and timely salary processing. The role works closely with Managed Service Providers (MSPs), HR teams, and Finance departments to maintain strong payroll governance and data integrity.
The position also plays a key role in process improvement, automation, and payroll system optimisation, ensuring operational efficiency and a better employee experience.
Key Responsibilities
Payroll Processing
The consultant manages the full payroll cycle for assigned regions, ensuring accurate calculations, timely processing, and verification of employee payroll data from systems such as MyHR and vendor platforms. The role includes identifying and correcting discrepancies before payroll execution.
Compliance and Governance
They ensure payroll processes comply with tax laws, statutory regulations, and social security requirements across all relevant countries. The role also involves liaising with government agencies for submissions, audits, and compliance checks while maintaining proper documentation for audit readiness.
Vendor and Stakeholder Management
The Payroll Consultant coordinates daily with external payroll vendors and MSPs to ensure service-level agreements are met. They also collaborate with HR, Finance, and Reward teams to ensure seamless payroll delivery and issue resolution.
Case Management
They handle payroll-related queries through internal ticketing systems, ensuring timely resolution, accurate documentation, and continuous improvement of recurring issues.
Continuous Improvement
The role supports automation initiatives using payroll systems and digital tools. It involves improving workflows, updating SOPs, testing system upgrades, and identifying process inefficiencies.
Reporting and Records Management
The consultant generates payroll reports, analyses trends, and ensures secure storage of payroll records in line with governance and data protection policies.
Team Support
The role includes supporting junior staff, assisting during high-volume payroll cycles, and ensuring continuity of operations.
Requirements
Applicants are expected to have:
- Proven experience in multi-country payroll management
- Strong understanding of taxation, statutory compliance, and payroll principles
- Experience working with HRIS systems such as SAP SuccessFactors, Oracle, or equivalent
- Familiarity with outsourced payroll vendors and shared service environments
- Strong English communication skills (written and verbal)
- Knowledge of audit and payroll governance processes
Desirable Skills
- Experience in payroll automation or system enhancement projects
- Proficiency in tools like Power BI, Tableau, or advanced Excel
- Experience working with HR, Finance, and IT teams in cross-functional settings
