OIST Research Internship Program – STEM Fields
Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology Graduate School offers short-term research internship opportunities in STEM fields for students seeking to enhance their academic and practical research experience.
Program Overview
The OIST Research Internship Program provides placements of 3–6 months in a laboratory of the student’s choice, subject to research suitability, academic background, available funding, and laboratory capacity. Interns may select projects across a wide range of research areas, including:
• Physics, Chemistry, Mathematical and Computational Sciences
• Marine Sciences, Neuroscience
• Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology
• Environmental and Ecological Science
• Quantum Science
Who Should Apply
The program is ideal for students who:
• Want to enhance current research skills or learn specific techniques using cutting-edge equipment
• Wish to explore a different research field or apply an interdisciplinary approach

PhD Program Consideration
• The internship is suitable for students considering applying to the OIST PhD program.
• Internships of four months or longer may be considered equivalent to one in-field lab rotation required for the OIST PhD Program, upon completion of required assignments.
Support Provided
• Travel: One direct round-trip air ticket (closest to internship dates)
• Accommodation: Furnished accommodation on or off campus funded by OIST or the hosting research unit
• Administrative Support: Assistance with Certificate of Eligibility (CoE) for visa application and registration procedures
• Allowance: 2,400 JPY per working day
• Transportation: OIST Shuttle Bus Pass
