Michigan State University is offering a fully funded Master’s-level research opportunity through its Department of Fisheries and Wildlife in collaboration with the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Michigan Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit. This opportunity is designed for a Master of Science (MS) Research Assistant who will work on a project focused on investigating waterfowl productivity in both urban and rural environments across Michigan, United States. The research will contribute to statewide wildlife management and conservation decision-making.
The selected candidate will collaborate closely with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources to monitor and estimate waterfowl productivity on both public and private lands. The work will involve the use of remote cameras and drones to collect ecological data. The student will also manage field technicians, process large volumes of photographic data, record vegetation in selected study areas, and conduct statistical analysis using R and GIS software.
The results of this research are expected to inform long-term waterfowl population estimates and guide wildlife management policies across the state.
Eligibility Requirements
Applicants must hold a Bachelor of Science degree in wildlife ecology or a closely related field. Candidates should have the ability to operate field vehicles and work effectively in remote wetland environments. Prior experience with remote cameras and photo data analysis is required.
Preferred qualifications include strong time management and problem-solving skills, the ability to work independently and in teams, and effective communication skills for collaboration with partner agencies. Additional advantages include experience with large ecological datasets, statistical programming in R, GIS-based spatial analysis, familiarity with waterfowl ecology and identification, and experience with drone technology and imagery analysis.
