CDC PUBLIC HEALTH INFORMATICS FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM 2027
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is inviting applications for the Public Health Informatics Fellowship Program (PHIFP) Class of 2027.
PHIFP provides on-the-job training for professionals to apply expertise in computer science, data analytics, data science and related fields to public health challenges.

ABOUT THE FELLOWSHIP
PHIFP is a two-year, full-time fellowship. Fellows are assigned to host sites within the CDC, where they work on advanced information systems and data projects while developing their skills through classroom and practical learning.
ELIGIBLE QUALIFICATIONS
Applicants must hold a qualifying degree from an accredited institution.
DOCTORAL LEVEL
PhD, MD, PharmD, DrPH or equivalent doctoral degree.
MASTER’S LEVEL
MPH, MS, MSc or equivalent master’s degree.
QUALIFYING FIELDS
The degree must be in one of the following areas:
- Public health, medicine, healthcare or health services research
- Computer science, data science or medical/public health informatics
- Statistics or epidemiology
- Engineering
- Operations research
Applicants must also have at least one year of documented full-time work or volunteer experience in the same field as their qualifying degree.
RESEARCH EXPERIENCE
Applicants should document research or evaluation experience completed during or after their academic training.
Examples include publications, thesis writing and defence, poster presentations, research proposals or evaluation proposals.
CITIZENSHIP AND WORK AUTHORIZATION
Applicants must meet applicable US citizenship, permanent residency or work authorization requirements.
Eligible categories may include:
- US citizens
- US Permanent Residents
- Certain non-US citizens with eligible work authorization, including qualifying OPT STEM, TN, J-1/J-2, H-1B or other applicable US work authorization.
Non-US citizen applicants who progress in the selection process may be contacted to discuss their visa and work authorization.
RELOCATION REQUIREMENT
Selected fellows must relocate to their assigned CDC site.
Approximately 85% of assignments are in Atlanta, Georgia, and 10% are in Washington, DC.
The fellowship is not remote, and relocation expenses are not covered by the programme.
FELLOWSHIP STATUS AND BENEFITS
PHIFP fellows are full-time equivalent federal government employees during the two-year fellowship.
Master’s degree fellows are paid at the GS-11, Step 3 level.
Doctoral degree fellows are paid at the GS-12, Step 3 level.
Fellows receive benefits available to other CDC federal employees, including paid annual and sick leave.
Salary increases may be possible after the first year based on performance and applicable recommendations.
