ABOUT THE ASSIGNMENT

Data-Lead Africa is recruiting Data Enumerators for an agricultural study that will collect information on agricultural production, income, farming practices, access to services and finance, employment, market participation, climate-smart agriculture, nutrition, and the inclusion of women and young people.

Selected enumerators will receive mandatory training and conduct face-to-face interviews with farmers and other agricultural value-chain actors using mobile data-collection platforms.

Applicants should apply for the state where they currently live or where they have strong knowledge of the local communities, language, agricultural activities, and travel routes.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Attend and successfully complete the mandatory enumerator training.
2. Learn and understand the study objectives, questionnaire, field procedures, and research ethics requirements.
3. Participate in questionnaire testing, simulations, and field practice.
4. Work with supervisors to prepare daily field schedules and movement plans.
5. Conduct face-to-face interviews with farmers and other agricultural value-chain actors.
6. Obtain informed consent from respondents before every interview.
7. Administer questionnaires accurately using a smartphone or tablet.
8. Capture GPS coordinates and support farm-area measurements where required.
9. Transcribe and translate interviews into English as part of the assignment deliverables.
10. Probe respectfully when responses are incomplete or unclear.
11. Review questionnaires for accuracy and completeness before submission.
12. Submit completed records within the agreed timelines.
13. Protect respondents’ privacy and maintain strict confidentiality.
14. Report field challenges and operational issues promptly to supervisors.
15. Follow all data-quality, safeguarding, ethical, and field-safety procedures.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS

University degree or equivalent qualification in Agricultural Science, Economics, Statistics, Data Science, Social Sciences, Development Studies, or a related discipline.

Relevant experience conducting surveys, interviews, or field research.

Practical experience using KoboToolbox, ODK, Survey Solutions, or similar mobile data-collection platforms.

Ability to communicate clearly in English and at least one language commonly spoken in the selected state.

Ability to transcribe and translate interviews into English.

Willingness and ability to travel to rural and remote communities.

Availability for the complete training and fieldwork period.

Strong communication, teamwork, and interpersonal skills.

Honesty, accuracy, patience, and respect for respondents.

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE

Preference will be given to applicants who have experience:

Conducting interviews with farmers or rural households.

Working on agricultural, livelihood, market-system, or rural-development studies.

Collecting quantitative or qualitative data for research and evaluation assignments.

Working with research firms, development organisations, NGOs, or government programmes.

Using GPS-enabled digital tools for farm mapping or land-area measurement.

Working with agricultural activities and rural communities within the selected state.

Interviewing women, young people, pastoralists, cooperatives, and underserved groups.

APPLICATION ASSESSMENT

Applications will be assessed based on relevant fieldwork experience, ability to use digital data-collection tools, knowledge of agriculture and rural communities, language proficiency, transcription and translation ability, familiarity with the selected state, and availability for the complete assignment.

Performance during screening, training, and field practice will also be considered.

Final engagement is subject to successful completion of training and satisfactory performance during the practical assessment.

WHAT SELECTED ENUMERATORS WILL NEED

An Android smartphone in good working condition.

A reliable power bank.

A valid means of identification.

Appropriate clothing and footwear for rural field visits.

Ability to charge and securely maintain field equipment.

Additional operational requirements will be communicated to selected candidates.

ASSIGNMENT LOCATION

Selected communities within the assigned state.
