Apply to Solutions and Data Journalism Training
HumAngle, in collaboration with Journalists for Human Rights, with support from the Canadian High Commission through the Canada Fund for Local Initiative, is opening applications for a training that puts verification, data, and solution journalism tools directly into the hands of reporters working in the North-central region. This training will bring together journalists reporting from Benue and Plateau states as part of the Countering Misinformation and Promoting Peace in Nigeria’s Middlebelt project.
The 2-day training seeks to respond to a crisis that has intensified. The HumAngle Security Tracker has documented 169 and 220 insecurity-linked fatalities through 61 and 59 incidents in Benue and Plateau states since January 2026, respectively.
Communities across both states continue to face recurring cycles of attack and reprisal, displacement and deepening mistrust conditions in which misinformation and disinformation spread quickly and often shape what happens next on the ground.
Much of the media coverage of these conflicts has struggled to keep pace with their complexity. Reporting too often relies on unverified claims, framing incidents in ways that harden ethnic and religious divisions rather than clarifying what actually happened, who was responsible and what could prevent the next attack. The training is designed to close that gap.
Over the course of the programme, fellows will work with HumAngle experts to build skills in information integrity: verification, data journalism, conflict-sensitive and solutions journalism. They will be required to produce a body of published work grounded in these methods and will be connected to community response networks working towards information warfare in their reporting areas. Participants will be provided with logistical support within the state to attend the training.
Applicants must
- Be resident and working as a journalist in Benue or Plateau State.
- Commit to a 2-day training in September 2026.
- Be willing to participate in all virtual sessions and deliver at least one data-informed solution story.

HumAngle recognises the volatile nature of certain communities within the targeted states and will apply proper risk assessment measures in supporting selected candidates to access the training location. Selected candidates are also required to consider the risks involved in travelling to the state capitals from their respective locations and clearly communicate all concerns to the team.
