INEC MEDIA ACCREDITATION FOR ELECTIONS
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has introduced an online accreditation process for media organisations seeking to cover elections in Nigeria.
The platform allows eligible media organisations to register, submit applications, nominate journalists and track the progress of their accreditation applications.
WHO CAN APPLY?
The accreditation process is open to:
- Television organisations.
- Radio organisations.
- Newspaper organisations.
- Online media organisations.
- Magazine organisations.
- Domestic and foreign media organisations.
Important: Individual journalists cannot apply independently. Journalists must be nominated by their media organisations.
HOW THE ACCREDITATION PROCESS WORKS
Step 1: Apply for an Election
Media organisations must register and complete their organisational profile. During an election’s application window, they can select their coverage states, provide a contact person and upload an application letter and a recent publication, where available.
Step 2: INEC Reviews and Recommends
A State or Headquarters administrator reviews the application and recommends it for accreditation capacity allocation.
Step 3: INEC Determines Accreditation Limits
INEC determines the maximum number of field and collation staff the organisation can nominate. Applications may also be flagged for further review or rejected.
Step 4: Nominate Journalists
Approved organisations can nominate journalists from their staff list within the allocated limits and select the state where each journalist will be deployed.
Step 5: INEC Approves Nominees
INEC reviews each nominated journalist and either approves or rejects the nomination. Organisations can view the decision and any remarks provided.
Step 6: Receive Media Accreditation Tags
Approved journalists receive official media accreditation tags containing QR codes, which election officials can scan for verification.

Accreditation is granted separately for each election.
