CALL FOR PROJECT CONCEPTS
GEF SMALL GRANTS PROGRAMME NIGERIA OPERATIONAL PHASE 8 PART 2
ORGANIZATION: UNDP GEF Small Grants Programme GEF SGP Nigeria
OPPORTUNITY: Project Concept Submission
COUNTRY: Nigeria
APPLICATION DEADLINE: 12 October 2026
ABOUT THE GEF SMALL GRANTS PROGRAMME
The GEF Small Grants Programme GEF SGP provides support to local organisations implementing practical projects that contribute to environmental protection, sustainable development, community resilience and sustainable livelihoods.
The submission of a Project Concept is the first step in the application process. A concept provides a brief description of the proposed project idea and allows the GEF SGP National Coordinator to assess whether the idea may be considered for support before applicants invest significant time and resources in developing a full proposal.
WHO CAN APPLY
The call is open to eligible registered organisations working in environmental management and sustainable development in Nigeria.
Eligible organisations include:
- Local Community Organisations
- National Non-Governmental Organisations
- Community-Based Organisations
- Civil Society Organisations
- Cooperatives
- Social Enterprises
- Research and Academic Institutions
Applicants must have at least 3 years of relevant experience in environmental management.
Research and academic institutions may submit practical project ideas but must provide evidence that the requested funding is not part of their normal institutional subvention.
IMPORTANT ELIGIBILITY INFORMATION
The GEF SGP will not provide grants to one organisation or related organisations for two projects at the same time.
Organisations outside the specified eligible categories should contact the GEF SGP before completing and submitting a Concept Form.
PROJECT CONCEPT REQUIREMENTS
The Concept Form should briefly address key factors relevant to GEF SGP support, including:
- Project purpose and objectives.
- Intended environmental impacts.
- Intended sustainable livelihood impacts.
- Relevance to Nigeria’s environmental and sustainable development priorities.
- Alignment with global GEF SGP strategies and relevant GEF focal areas.
- Community participation and involvement.
- The organisation’s capacity and experience to implement the proposed project.
- The practical environmental and community benefits expected from the project.
The Concept submission is intended to create an initial dialogue between potential project implementers and the GEF SGP. The National Coordinator may review the idea, discuss it further with the proposing organisation and provide guidance on whether the concept can be considered for GEF SGP support.
APPLICATION PROCESS
Applicants should complete and submit the official GEF SGP Project Concept Form within the specified period.
Applicants are advised to follow the instructions in the Concept Form carefully. Failure to provide the required information or follow the prescribed format may result in delays or possible disqualification.
IMPORTANT NOTICE

Only organisations whose concept papers are shortlisted will receive feedback.
