Applications are now open for the African Research Fellowship 2024/2025.

This fellowship, a collaborative effort between the European Space Agency (ESA) and the African Union Commission (AUC), is designed to empower African researchers (with a PhD or Master’s degree plus extensive research experience) to engage in Earth Observation (EO) research and development. The program is a key part of the EO AFRICA Initiative.

The selected African Research Fellows will focus on using Earth Observation data to tackle some of Africa’s most pressing challenges, especially in water resource management and food security.

Fellows will combine EO data with in-situ data and modern modeling techniques within a cloud-based environment. The aim is to find practical solutions to issues affecting Africa’s water and food systems, such as farming, coastal processes, and climate change impacts.

The fellowship provides four African researchers with the opportunity to spend a year at ESA-ESRIN in Frascati, Italy, working closely with ESA scientists.

This hands-on experience will be enriched by access to the EO AFRICA Space Academy and Digital Campus, as well as collaboration with European scientists through the EO AFRICA Innovation Lab. The research must begin no later than June 2025.
