ABOUT THE ROLE
The Interpreter will support communication in sensitive and complex humanitarian contexts, including protection activities, visits to people deprived of liberty, family reunification processes and dialogue with authorities and parties to conflict.
The role requires excellent language skills, sound judgement, cultural awareness, adaptability and strict confidentiality.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provide oral interpretation during confidential interviews and humanitarian activities.
- Support communication between ICRC delegates, affected populations, authorities and other stakeholders.
- Support activities related to restoring family links, including Red Cross messages, family tracing and visits to families of detainees.
- Translate written materials and correspondence.
- Analyse and report on detention conditions, security and other matters relevant to the ICRC mandate.
- Provide support to other protection activities when required.
- Develop and maintain operational contacts with relevant authorities, organisations and other stakeholders.
REQUIRED PROFILE
- Excellent command of English at C1 level.
- Excellent command of Hausa at C1 level.
- At least 2 years of professional experience.
- Previous interpretation or translation experience is an advantage.
- Strong motivation for humanitarian work.
- Ability to work under pressure in potentially dangerous environments.
- Open-minded, adaptable and culturally aware.
- University education or a degree in interpretation or translation is an advantage.
ADDITIONAL LANGUAGE SKILLS
Proficiency in other ICRC operational languages is a strong asset, including French, Spanish, Russian, Arabic and Portuguese.
FIELD AND OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
- In line with the ICRC’s principle of neutrality, personnel are not assigned to a country of which they are nationals.
- Candidates must be in good health and undergo a medical check-up before field deployment.
- Candidates must possess a valid driving licence for manual transmission vehicles.
- Candidates must be prepared to accept unaccompanied postings for their first two missions, with each mission lasting a minimum of 12 months, or a total of 24 months.
