🎯 POSITION SUMMARY
UNICEF Nigeria is seeking three qualified National Consultants to translate an Adolescent Girls Storybook and accompanying multimedia content from English into Hausa, Yoruba and Igbo.
The consultants will ensure that the translations preserve the original meaning, tone, cultural sensitivity, child-rights messaging and storytelling style while using natural, age-appropriate language that is accessible to adolescent girls, caregivers, communities and development partners.
The translated storybook will support girls’ empowerment, learning, leadership, advocacy and positive social norms, while amplifying the experiences and aspirations of adolescent girls across Nigeria.
📌 KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Participate in an inception meeting with UNICEF and agree on expectations, timelines, formats and feedback processes.
- Develop a translation approach, workplan, glossary and quality-assurance process.
- Translate the complete storybook into Hausa, Yoruba or Igbo.
- Preserve the original meaning, storytelling voice, emotional tone and adolescent-friendly language.
- Maintain gender-responsive, child-rights and safeguarding terminology.
- Adapt idioms and expressions where necessary to ensure cultural relevance.
- Develop and maintain a terminology and translation glossary.
- Edit and proofread translated materials to ensure accuracy and consistency.
- Incorporate UNICEF feedback and submit revised versions with appropriate version control.
- Deliver clean, publication-ready manuscripts in Microsoft Word and other agreed formats.
- Review designed/layout versions to verify text flow, punctuation, formatting and readability.
- Ensure the translations promote messages around girls’ empowerment, resilience, leadership and innovation.
🎓 QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in Translation, Linguistics, Nigerian Languages, English, Communication, Literature, Education, Development Studies, Gender Studies or a related field.
Experience:
- Minimum of 5 years’ professional experience in translation, localization, editing or multilingual publishing.
- Proven experience translating educational, adolescent, child or social-development materials.
- Demonstrated experience translating from English into at least one of the target languages: Hausa, Yoruba or Igbo.
- Experience with editing, proofreading, terminology management, quality assurance and version control.

- Strong coordination and communication skills.
🌍 LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS
- Fluency in English.
- Native or near-native proficiency in Hausa, Yoruba or Igbo, depending on the language assignment.
- Strong understanding of Nigerian linguistic and cultural contexts.
Desirable:
- Experience working on gender, adolescent empowerment, social norms transformation or child-rights materials.
- Previous experience translating UNICEF, UN or development-sector publications.
- Experience translating materials for children or adolescents.
- Familiarity with accessibility and inclusive communication principles.
