Research analyst at Chatham House

The International Security Programme (ISP) provides innovative, policy-relevant research in international security and defence issues. Our team is seeking a Research Analyst. Within ISP, the analyst will primarily work on projects around the global security architecture, conflict prevention and deterrence, and the intersection between security and technology. Current projects include among others evaluating the efficiency of a major global partnership to reduce CBRN threats, developing scenarios for the future of arms control and assessing the UK’s conflict prevention toolkit.

Reporting to the Senior Research Fellow, the ideal candidate will have a good record in project management, impactful research and fundraising. This role includes working on complex research projects, developing innovative and creative research methodologies, publishing research papers and other content, supporting fundraising activities, building relationships with partners and funders, and collaborating with an outstanding team of researchers. This role will also have the opportunity to collaborate with other research programmes, especially within the newly-formed Centre for Global Governance and Security which brings together four existing programmes (International Security, International Law, Health Security, and Digital Governance).

Principal ResponsibilitiesDeliverySupport policy-relevant research using mixed methods approaches, including desk-based research, literature reviews, partner mapping and analysis, key informant interviews and convening group discussions, and primary and secondary data analysis;Contribute to project design and delivery, including helping to define objectives, goals and outputs, and delivering on project activities (including research, events and publications);Convey complex information clearly and concisely to different audiences in oral and written formats, tailoring content and approach accordingly;Promote your research area and our work on it as widely as possible and publicise research project activity and its policy relevance;Supervise budgeted income and expenditure of project budgets;Assist in preparing narrative and financial reports;Prepare, coordinate and implement conferences, roundtables, workshops and consultations across different geographies;Lead on the publication process for research outputs, collaborating closely with colleagues and the Publications department;

Working with the Director and Senior Research Fellow of the Programme to identify and secure fundraising opportunities for new workstreams;Supporting the growth of the team and its network of internal and external contributors;Actively contribute to the delivery of the Chatham House EDI strategy;

Develop and maintain networks and links with external individuals, businesses, and institutions relevant to your research;Maintain and strengthen relationships with existing partners on related work, involving them in relevant meetings and providing tailored briefings;Coordinate and deliver projects, working collaboratively to meet objectives, outputs, timelines and financial targets;Collaborate with colleagues to create a positive working culture, ensuring good practices are shared and the institute’s standards of behaviour are upheld.Gain knowledge of the sector and its most important partners.
Person Specification

Essential Skills and Experience

Proven research experience in policy topics across security policy such as biological security, nuclear disarmament, arms control and non-proliferation in an academic, business or public policy context;Experience conducting systematic literature reviews, using a range of research methodologies and strong quantitative and qualitative analysis skills;Experience contributing to successful funding bids;Superb communication skills, able to present information and arguments persuasively, both in person and in writing;Confidence presenting and speaking in public;An excellent teammate and collaborator, able to work with people at all levels;Experience in helping to develop successful research events with clear policy relevance;Outstanding organizational skills, attention to detail and ability to work logically and methodically;Demonstrated trouble-shooting, fact-checking and problem-solving abilities and able to work effectively under pressure while balancing multiple commitments;Dedicated and self-motivated, with a collegiate and consistent approach to work;Experienced in using Excel spreadsheets and databases.

Salary: £32,000 per year.

Contract: Full-time, 2 year Fixed-term contract (Renewal subject to review and funding).

Location: Hybrid (Office/Home), minimum 2 days in the office per week.
