Minimum Qualifications & Requirements

  • Education:
    University degree or diploma in humanitarian affairs, political or social sciences, or a related field (essential).
  • Professional Experience:
    • Minimum of 4 years of demonstrable experience in the use of statistical tools, reporting, and liaising with government authorities, preferably within the international humanitarian field (essential).
    • Minimum of 4 years of experience working in Africa (essential).
  • Languages:
    • Fluency in English (essential).
    • Fluency in one or more local Nigerian languages (essential).

Position Overview

This role is hosted by a United Nations-related migration agency, which leads humanitarian coordination in Nigeria in partnership with governmental and non-governmental stakeholders. Due to the escalating violence and displacement in Nigeria’s North-East and North-West, the agency has expanded its field operations to address the growing humanitarian needs.

The Project Assistant will support the Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM) activities under the Conflict Prevention, Crisis Response & Resilience (CPCRR) programme, implemented in collaboration with Mercy Corps Netherlands and the Centre for Democracy & Development (CDD), across 48 communities in Katsina and Zamfara States.


Role Objectives

Under the supervision of the Chief of Mission, Head of Office (Katsina), and technical guidance from the Program Officer (DTM), the Project Assistant will:

  • Coordinate field-level data collection and analysis related to Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs).
  • Work closely with partners including SEMA, Nigerian Red Cross, and other field actors.
  • Train field partners on DTM methodologies and tools.
  • Monitor and evaluate DTM operations to ensure efficiency and impact.
  • Manage administrative tasks: staff payments, invoice reviews, and financial documentation.
  • Ensure timely and accurate data reporting according to program standards.
  • Prepare and submit weekly narrative reports on field implementation.
  • Represent the DTM program at local meetings and events.
  • Build internal capacity among client staff involved in DTM initiatives.
  • Perform additional duties as required.

Key Competencies

  • Strong knowledge of humanitarian principles and IDP-related data collection.
  • Proficiency in statistical tools and reporting.
  • Fluency in English and one or more languages used in Katsina and Zamfara states.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills.
  • Demonstrated ethical standards and commitment to diversity and inclusion.
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving skills under pressure.
  • Technological proficiency, including MS Office; knowledge of design tools is an advantage.
  • Adaptability and willingness to work in high-risk and evolving environments.
