Nigerian Government Approves N6 Billion for Vulnerable Populations: Cash Transfers and Interest-Free Loans

The Nigerian Federal Government has announced a significant intervention to address the pressing needs of vulnerable populations, approving a total of N6 billion for both conditional cash transfers and interest-free loans. This initiative, unveiled at the launch of the 2025 Nigeria Humanitarian Needs and Response Plan (HNRP) in Abuja, aims to alleviate poverty, enhance food security, and empower displaced and marginalized communities.

Conditional Cash Transfers:

A sum of N4 billion has been allocated for conditional cash transfers, targeting at least 10 million displaced households across Nigeria, with a primary focus on the most vulnerable. This program, scheduled to run from February to April 2025, will prioritize families affected by displacement, especially in the conflict-stricken Northeast, including Borno, Adamawa, and Yobe states. Women, particularly widows, pregnant women, and those living with disabilities, will be prioritized due to their unique vulnerabilities.

Interest-Free Loans for Rural Farmers:

In a parallel effort to boost food production and self-sufficiency, the government has approved N2 billion for interest-free loans to rural farmers. These loans, ranging from N300,000 to N400,000 per household, will enable farmers to access resources, enhance their productivity, and connect with viable market opportunities.

Addressing Vulnerabilities:

The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Prof. Nentawe Yilwada, emphasized the government’s dedication to combating poverty and the humanitarian crisis, noting the disproportionate challenges faced by female-headed households. Ensuring access to food, water, healthcare, and safety for these women is a top priority.

The 2025 Nigeria Humanitarian Needs and Response Plan (HNRP):

The HNRP, a collaborative effort developed through extensive consultations, aims to address Nigeria’s increasing humanitarian challenges by integrating humanitarian, developmental, and peacebuilding strategies. It seeks to build resilience and long-term solutions for affected communities. The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) estimates that 7.8 million people in Borno, Adamawa, and Yobe will require humanitarian assistance in 2025, highlighting the critical need for these interventions.

This comprehensive approach underscores the Nigerian government’s commitment to addressing both the immediate needs and long-term development of its vulnerable citizens.
