Position Overview

We are looking for a Senior Project Officer to lead the delivery of an integrated peacebuilding, climate resilience, and governance program in either Benue or Sokoto State. This role involves strategic coordination, hands-on implementation, capacity building for local partners, and ongoing monitoring and evaluation of project activities. The successful candidate will play a vital role in ensuring effective stakeholder engagement, strong compliance with donor expectations, and meaningful outcomes for communities affected by conflict and climate pressures.

Key Responsibilities

Project Implementation and Coordination

  • Lead the planning and day-to-day management of field-level activities in collaboration with project partners.
  • Organize community-based activities and ensure timely execution of project deliverables in line with agreed work plans.
  • Assist in drafting progress reports, case studies, and success stories to capture learning and impact.
  • Support the communication, outreach, and engagement activities involving project stakeholders.

Monitoring and Evaluation

  • Track project milestones, prepare monitoring tools, and document outcomes against targets.
  • Collaborate with partners to collect and analyze data for reporting, learning, and improvement.
  • Contribute to developing frameworks and tools to measure program effectiveness.
  • Work closely with the M&E team to support partner organizations in data gathering, analysis, and adaptive learning.

Stakeholder Engagement and Capacity Building

  • Provide technical guidance to local implementing partners and community-based organizations.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with local authorities, community leaders, and state-level actors.
  • Support training sessions, capacity development, and mentorship for partners and grassroots groups.

Compliance, Budget Oversight, and Reporting

  • Ensure all activities are in compliance with donor guidelines, Nigerian laws, and International Alert policies.
  • Collaborate with the finance team to monitor project spending and manage budget adjustments.
  • Contribute to periodic donor reports, reviews, and financial justifications.

Team Collaboration and Organizational Support

  • Contribute to a collaborative and values-driven work environment.
  • Uphold Alert’s policies on finance, procurement, HR, and security.
  • Support broader team activities as needed and participate in cross-organizational learning and reflection.

Candidate Profile

Essential Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in peace and conflict studies, international development, political science, or a related discipline.
  • At least 7 years of experience managing development or peacebuilding projects, ideally in northern Nigeria.
  • Proven track record in community-based peacebuilding, stakeholder engagement, and governance programming.
  • Strong analytical and writing skills, including experience preparing donor reports and success stories.
  • Familiarity with conflict-sensitive approaches and gender-inclusive programming.

Desirable Attributes:

  • Deep understanding of the socio-political dynamics in Benue or Sokoto and surrounding regions.
  • Ability to work independently in remote areas and manage diverse relationships.
  • Fluency in English (spoken and written); knowledge of local languages is an advantage.
  • High proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Work Environment and Travel

  • The position is based in either Benue or Sokoto State with frequent travel to project sites, including rural and hard-to-reach areas.
