Main Purpose of the Role

To plan, organize, implement, supervise, and analyze infection prevention and control activities in the project or health facility. This ensures quality care and safety for patients, caretakers, and staff, in line with MSF and Ministry of Health protocols.

Key Responsibilities

• Implement and monitor IPC practices across all departments including sterilization, laundry, and kitchen.

• Collaborate with the medical team to assess and apply transmission-based precautions when required.

• Provide training, supervision, and technical support to staff on IPC.

• Ensure proper organization within the health facility such as adequate bed spacing, handwashing stations, and clean-dirty flow.

• Improve adherence to aseptic techniques and the use of antiseptics, detergents, and disinfectants.

• Monitor use of IPC materials and equipment, including PPE and cleaning supplies.

• Actively participate in the IPC Committee and assist in developing and monitoring the IPC Action Plan.

• Participate in epidemic response and manage MDRO outbreaks by activating contingency plans.

• Support nursing care and monitor IPC aspects within care procedures.

• Prepare regular reports and meeting minutes on IPC activities.

• Manage IPC-related HR tasks including recruitment, induction, evaluation, coaching, and supervision.

• Collaborate with other committees like Antimicrobial Stewardship and Quality of Care.

• Build capacity of the Ministry of Health (MoH) team on IPC for long-term sustainability.

• Ensure compliance with waste segregation and disposal in coordination with the WASH team.

• Maintain good collaboration with MoH.

• Carry out any other duties assigned by the line manager.

IPC Scope Includes

• Hand hygiene, PPE use, sterilization, aseptic technique, environmental cleaning, waste and linen management, respiratory hygiene.

• Water and sanitation essentials such as water supply, waste management, latrines, vector control.

• Transmission-based precautions (contact, droplet, airborne) for specific infections.

Job Requirements

Education:

• Diploma or Bachelor’s degree in Nursing Science or Midwifery (essential)

• Certification or degree in IPC (preferred)

Experience:

• Previous work with MSF or other INGOs (preferred)

Languages:

• English (essential)

• Hausa (desirable)

Skills:

• Basic skills in Microsoft Word and Excel
